Jacob A60 on Sale. Only Lasts Five Days!

A lot depends on if you get an EZ900 or EZ1000 emitter - EZ900's are better throwers. I've been getting both in A60's. There are other inconsistencies in pieces, batch's too that effect the throw on these Jacobs, but of course for that price, expect randomness.

I think you guys changed my mind... Will also try one, even just for the sake of getting a dedicated thrower. Was thinking about a smallsun t13, but this seems smaller and safer. (No cells in series).

I'm going to order this too. I like my light throwy, but a true thrower is not practical for me, but my collection wouldn't be complete with a crazy thrower...at least after modding. At least I'll be able to do it for less than $30 fully modded instead of many times more.

Anybody had success with a dedomed XPG2 on copper and some good amps?

Did this once but not on copper, just normal aluminium base. My mistake was using 20mm base where my A60 has slight recess specific for 16mm, making it kinda float and had bad thermal contact. It only got 50k+ lux@1m and consistently dropping quickly through use.

I had no doubt it would reach over 100k if set up properly (with driver swap and all). However the beam is very tiny and unusable. So I didn’t proceed with 16mm XPG2 but rather went with good old dedomed XM-L, which gave me also 50+k without any other mods, but with huge usable beam. Very happy with it this way.

Oh, and my Jacob A60 is also from Aurabuy and I would like to say it’s of good quality

Um, model? Link?

To those who seemed to be under the impression it’s $10, the sale price is not 20% off $12.56. The sale price IS $12.56, no coupon code needed. (And no coupon code that I can find that works. The old 12% 37B12off coupon from March no longer works.) That’s 20% off the “list” price of $15.75, although the price at Spasmod’s review was $14.38. Still, this is the best price I can recall seeing on this (has there been better?).

I’d made a note to self to wait for some kind of sale, then kind of forgot about it—this post brought it back - sold!

Width of the head is listed at 55mm. The width of the heads of FandyFire STL-V6 and FandyFire HD2010 (different reflectors? Trying to decide on one or something else…) are both listed as 62mm (per fasttech). That’s not the exact reflector width, nor do we have reflector depth, but gives you an idea. Bose301s measured the reflector of his HD2010 as 58mm outer diameter here.

This is a very low price for what would be considered a “wide reflector” light. Just today I read a post where someone paid $20 for a 55mm light purchased just for modding.

Anyone notice how DEEP this reflector is?! From Spasmod’s review:

By contrast, this is an HD2010 reflector (I hope JohnnyMac won’t mind me borrowing this pic to make the point! Thanks again JM!). Notice how much shorter it is. Remember it’s about the same width. HD2010 on the right, a $100 ThorLite TT-TF03 on the left, which is longer. The Jacob looks longer than them both.

(And I’d add as a sidenote, JohnnyMac got 5 thank-yous/feedbacks on that review, while the exact same review posted on CPF, got precisely zero replies.)

You can’t talk about a $12 light that beats Surefires to a pulp there, what do you expect?!?

Oh I see! :open_mouth:

Are the EZ900s the smaller ones? I’ve compared the XR-E of my A60 with the XR-E of my BL-8468 (SK-68 clone) and the A60’s LED has a smaller ‘phosphor square’ than that of the BL-8468. Does that mean that I’m ‘lucky’ to get the EZ900?

Yes - the EZ900's are the smaller dye, but more concentrated. They also will have a lower lumens output.

For the A60, I've found the best result with an XP-E2 and got over 100 kcd with some focus fiddling, maybe up to 2.8A, but 2.4 or so may get the same result.

You can save about 40 cents, :D by using 3AURABUY :D 3% off.

No way stock Jacob will throw that far. Well maybe some faint light on highly reflective surface but not usable light.

Expect usable light at max 250 meters(well not so usable for true target identifying). Reflectors spreads hotspot over larger distances.

As you said you have 2200 lux at 5 meters 2200×5×5 = 55000 lux or 55KCD
6230 lux at 3 meters 6230×3×32= 56070 lux or 56KCD

So where did you get this 76.64KCD numbers?

First about people who are talking about narrow spot or useless beam. Especially for XP-G2 in this flashlight which has beautiful beam with enough lux/lumens. You did not find use for such light so don’t scare other people who need that kind of thrower. People that are really field using flashlights can find usefulness for each kind of flashlight and specially thrower flashlights. I can find use for each kind of flashlights.

About XP-G2 and XP-E2 in this flashlight

My tuned versions will both throw same figures on lux meter measured at 7 meters converted. 190-200KCD.

But at larger distances XP-E2 will throw further. Is this defying laws of physics? No. It is all in the way reflector focus them.

XP-G2 has larger hotspot in this flashlight and on larger distances that spot is getting bigger and bigger and light finally scatters.
XP-E2 has narrower hotspot so reflector manages to focus hotspot better over larger distances.

Side by side(saber fight) XP-E2 appears longer. Light meter at 7 meters has same figures.

That all means that we should trust our eyes more than light meters. Don’t calculate ansi distance etc. Calculate distance at which you can with 100% identify some target (weather you using scope or just bare eyes). Some of us see better and some less.

And for super thrower reflector lights measurements should be taken at larger distances.

190-200 kcd is very good #'s for the Jacob. Got a few Q's, because not sure if I've seen anything that high recorded on a Jacob, but actually, I don't think I de-domed an emitter on a Jacob either and don't recall seeing any throw #'s on a de-domed Jacob.

  • what driver? high many amps?
  • are both the XP-E2 and XP-G2 de-domed?
  • have any details about the emitter tuning? If I recall, I epoxied down a plastic alignment piece to center the XP-E2, then added another plastic piece stacked to better tune it.

Update: I did 2 A60's with XP-E2 (domed) with a 2.8A driver and got 116 kcd. rdrfronty has one

Interested as well..

200kcd seems a lot.

They are estimates based on the data I read from one of the threads here. I’m not sure who made it but he presented a table of the readings of all his flashlights, including dedomed, modified and different versions of a certain light (e.g. SRK T6, SRK U2…). I have three flashlights (stock) that are included in the table he made: The BTU Shocker XM-L U2. the Sky Ray King T6, and the Black Shadow Terminator. In his table, the Shocker gives 125KCD, the SRK T6 gives 25.1KCD and the BST gives 57.3KCD.

My readings (Using HS1010) for my Shocker are 10060 for 3 meters and 3630 for 5 meters. For my Terminator, 4610 for 3 mtrs and 1670 for 5 mtrs, and for my SRK, 2020 for 3 mtrs and 727 for 5 mtrs.

Using the data from the table, I found out that I need to multiply the resulting KCD in my HS1010 readings by about 1.38 (average) to get more or less the same results. I did the same on the KCDs of all my flashlights that’s why for the A60: ((56.07KCD+55KCD)/2)*1.38=76.64KCD.

It was rdrfronty’s table. He presented it here: Full Test Data on 50 of Our Flashlights

Oh man. I couldn't resist and ordered one. I have really gone over board on acquisitions lately. My wife is going to kill me. I wish she didn't get home before me everyday. That would be fantastic. Sorry, daydreaming.

Thank you Mia and Aura Buy for another great deal!

I ordered an A60 from AuraBuy on the Aug. 1st. It arrived on the 15th. Don’t know if mine was in the same batch as what is on sale. Or if that even matters. Mine was $13.49. I have included a photo of the emitter in my light. Maybe you guys can tell what it is by the photo. Love the light.

Thanks, I ordered one for $12.18 with 3% off coupon…while still in bed! :zipper_mouth_face:

Finally, my first bigass thrower, price is too good to pass up even if its copy of other light(which one?!), picked up two, now need some decent batts, pitty I missed on that Panasonic protecteds group buy :D!
