The Javelot Mini (just released today) has a circular emitter I’ve never seen before. It produces an extremely defined beam similar to what I think of with a theatrical spotlight.
I produced a review about the light, which I found a ton of fun to use.
Indeed the copper zones are different and the glass is turned 90° in realtion to the bond wires, but these are simple changes so it could be just a revision, the LES appears to be the same.
I like the bell on the tail cap…first thing I noticed in photos and it looks like it’s comfortable in the hand…although with that I think maybe a less aggressive pattern on the tube body would be fine. I wonder if that beam would be a little nicer with a slight focus adjustment if possible. The pattern on the pavement when you moved the beam momentarily in front of the manhole cover was just odd to look at wasn’t it!
Since this is an uncommonly easy to access Olight, any chance you could take a photo of the mcpcb and a measurement for aspiring modders who might want something else in there? Any idea of the current draw?
I like the holster, too. Just like clips I think that holsters and pouches are an area where most light manufacturers could improve a lot if someone wants to put a little effort into it.
I bought the Nitecore MH40S because it uses this (or a similar) emitter (“Luminengin G9”). Was wanting the perfect round spot without the corner artifacts. Hot spot was terrible, though - Looks like there’s a galaxy floating around the hotspot. Bad reflector design maybe, but works well for its purpose, just not on a white wall.
I have my doubts that it is Yinding, but I’m not ruling it out. I reached out to my Olight rep and asked if they would settle this and tell me which emitter it is, and the engineers told my rep to not disclose the emitter. It’s actually really typical of the Chinese manufacturers to try to keep that secret (AceBeam, NiteCore, etc) but it’s still frustrating.
There’s probably a couple factories in China making this emitter as an ODM or OEM. Basically slight variations per the customers request. Nitecore, Speras, and now Olight have this LED in their lights. It’s a great led and so far they’re the only ones with a round les.
And yes, these companies are very tight-lipped about externally-sourced parts…lots of competition.
