You can make a joule thief yourself pretty easily, there’s a very good video on YouTube that shows how to make one, made by “bigclivedotcom” (I can recommend his channel). Just search for it.
though the joule thief things seem like a lot of trouble, to wring the last 2c worth of juice, out of a 69c battery.
if they cost $10, you would have to go through 500 batteries just to pay for it
still the light would be too dim for a lot of things
plus it would be strobing, annoying
also, one of the ones that site is selling has ‘cosmetic damage’ - from a leaking battery - which is a real risk when you are running them down so low
would be better to get a $20 light than can go down to .5 lumens, fpr 100+ hours run time, plus have higher modes for more light.
I did moonlight run-time tests on my 1xAA Zebralights. 2-3 weeks on an Eneloop. That should be a month on an alkaline. Very usable moonlight level. Drains the battery down to about 0.8v. There’s not much left by that point.
And, yes, high modes if you need them.
Any 1xAA light with a moonlight mode should do well. Even if it’s not the most efficient, you’ll still get a couple of weeks. After that, your neighbor has shot you and taken your food and flashlight.
I think most people miss the point here, you dont build joule thief because you want to use it. at least i built mine out of curiosity it was fun to have it working and got a faint light from 5mm led i even try it on Cree Q5 led and then play around with copper winding to see what the effects are. It is true they are useless for us flashaholic people but that doesn’t meant you shouldn’t try it.
I don’t intend to get a joule thief to milk every drop of juice out of a battery for fun. I want to able to pick up a used cell in an emergency and produce lighting.
Not quite a JT, but wrings every last bit of juice and pulp out of “dead” cells, even the AAs that don’t run my optical mouse anymore. That’s my bobofett light. Beat to Hell, looks the part, and I feed it “dead” cells that aren’t good for anything else, for nighttime use (moonlight/firefly light to not ruin my night-vision).
Then, frankly, I’d recommend just getting a batteryless light, like a shakelight (magnet+coil, shake it back’n’forth to charge the cap) or one of those with a crank.
