Laptop battery pack question

I’m not doing this anytime soon, but i’ve wondered, if i have an old laptop battery pack and decide to replace the cells because they are dying, if it currently has 2200mAh cells and i put in 2800mAh, will the circuitry and the laptop recognize the higher capacity, or will it shut itself off thinking its dead based on its original capacity?

I’m thinking it may just go by voltage, so if i use a higher Ah cell it won’t matter since it will be able to figure out its SOC based on voltage at at any given time, but its also possible that it keeps track of mAh used and calculates that against a value set when it was built.

The Cells are spot-welded to the rails. Replacement is a non-trivial job.

I think that many laptop battery cases are nearly impossible to put back together (at least neat enough to reuse).

not an issue in my case, i’ve done it before when i needed to test my first xm-l light and didn’t have lithium yet

i would not be able to spot weld but relatively flat soldering should be doable
