Latest fun gadget 808 #16 lens D "key chain" camera

I just got one of these “key chain” cameras (just type in 808 #16 on ebay). Anyone else have one of these?

It does basically what the video camera in your cell phone does but it’s the size of a electronic lock/unlock control for your car. It’s styled to look like one as well.

I got it to attach to the nose of a RC airplane and to Velcro to my helmet when I rock climb but there are many uses for one. They even have motion detection and “loop” mode if you wanted to use it as a security camera.

They are exceptional for recording flight from the “cockpit” on a RC airplane but I think they are interesting for any “first person view” type of recording.

Just curious as to whether any of you have been using one and what you use it for.

Has most of the gathered info on 808 cameras.

I bought a 720p version as a gift. Due to construction it was difficult to point and shoot, the lens didn’t seem straight-ahead in my sample. It survived an unexpected trip in the washing machine though!

The newer version, mobius, made by the same group, is a significant step up in video quality:

never heard about this type of fun camera before, and although I can not afford it at the moment, I couldn't resist, just bought one

question: I am in the process of making a IR-flashlight, does this camera have a IR filter, if so, is it removable so that I can use it to record the performance of my light? (this question is probably more appropriate in a RC plane forum...)

Which camera (& lens) did you get?

Since they say “Lens B, with IR filter on the front” I’m guessing the IR filter on lens B might be the “red” outer coating. If so then it wouldn’t really be removable on that lens.

Found this on the 808 #16 with lens D fisheye. ” Near infra-red photography using the HD 808#16D camera”:http://www.armadale.org.uk/808dinfraredconversion.htm

I bought this one:

I guess that because it has that tiny lens inside the package, that modding it for infrared imaging will be more difficult. But I'll have a look at it when it arrives :-)

The lenses are small but bigger then the leds we manage to reflow & dedome around here.

You could send the seller a message to request the larger “lens D”. Presuming you don’t care for covert (hidden) camera use. Also the camera / lens module is replaceable so you could buy a different module later.

I had some of these all died and were not reliable….

ok, thanks for all information, I will first have a look at it when it arrives :-) (if it ever gets past my postbox, there have been cases of missing items from the central postboxes in my appartment block lately :-( )

Do you mean the #16 808, specifically? These and the Mobius are made by the same folks, and are quite reliable. I have killed a #16 before, but only through significant abuse.

The 808 keychain camera case is used for a number of other cameras, made by a variety of companies. Most of these are cheaper, but also much lower in quality.

I am not sure, but I had some different mini cameras two in the key remote style. One is broken and has never worked the other one has a bad battery and works only for seconds…
I also have a small camera from turnigy which broke after maybe 15 minutes use.
So I am done with them.

Thanks, Helios. I didn’t know you could get different lens for it. Fisheye would make it more useful.

Looks like they’ve come a way since this one that inspired my purchase.

Do you know if you have a #16 camera with removable camera/lens module?

You can also just stick a wide angle lens for mobile phones onto a 808 camera. 808 wide angle lens examples
The Jelly wide angle lens is only $1 (£0.63) on ebay.com and they say worldwide shipping. On ebay.co.uk they are £1.

I had a jelly lens (since been lost), I thought it was ok at the time. Also have a “0.67x wide angle + macro lens” $2.45. They are pretty nice, all glass and metal.

I don’t know what kind, I don’t have it to open it up. I know it had SD card slot and no internal memory.

If they could have two buttons (for separate video/camera control) I would get another for myself!

From what I’ve read you have to make sure to get the “real” 808 #16. I bought mine from a US seller and it was about $40 not including SD card.

If you are paying $15 you aren’t likely to be getting the 808 #16. There is a thread hundreds of posts long on a RC forum and this model seems to be quite reliable and the video quality is nice as well (many videos are posted).
