Latest Sky Ray Kings from Tmart

Tmart had a sale on SRK’s over Thanksgiving. With the magic word you could get them for $43 each. Like a good sucker, I bought two. And they suck!

One came in the full standard SRK box. The other was in a flimsy white box and missing the manual, lanyard, and extra o-ring.

The lights were the cool white (measured 6500K) version. A proper CW SRK should spew over 2200 lumens. One of these puts out 1600 lumens. The other does 1400 lumens if you futz with it, at other times 1100 lumens.

I can’t recommend buying SRKs (or anything else) from Tmart…

Bummer. I bought 2 as well and both seem legit with appropriate output.

That sucks. Hmm…mod time?

Both of you can you show some pics?

You’ll never know unless you have an integrating sphere to check them with…

A couple weeks back I remember talk of a different (read: “crap”) driver that some people were receiving in their new SRKs. It was simple resistored direct-drive board with PWM, no toroidal inductors like the original buck driver.

yeah me too… i got 2 of them from Tmart on black friday using the coupon…but unfortunately they only sent me only 1…
when i ask them where’s the other one?
the customer service said… it was being replenished… whatever that mean :Sp
now i checked on my t-mart acct… lo behold… i didn’t even see the other order but when i checked my paypal… it’s already charged… grr… |(
now it’s been 8 days already and i haven’t received my other light yet, email them already… waiting impatiently
anyway… not a bad flashlight

These have the “good” drivers with the inductors…

It seems that the Skyray King is a gamble when you order either from T-mart or CNQ. You never know what you’re getting. At least T-mart is in the US and seems to be easier to deal with customer service in the states.

……. :open_mouth:

FandyFire is just a name that the OEM who makes the Sky Ray King slaps onto some of the Sky Ray Kings.

Skyray? That’s interesting considering FandyFire has their own factory AFAIK. 8)

The OEM who originally designed and produced the SRK is the same OEM who produces the range of BlackShadow branded lights we’ve seen enter the market recently. Out of curiosity, I had a discussion with them via email and they informed me that they also OEM for a number of other players. Specifically, they confirmed that they manufacture the FandyFire UV-S5, as well as the black Sky Ray Kings that CNQG are selling. They also now produce a SolarStorm branded King.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that some of the players they OEM for don’t have their own manufacturing operations which spit out a range of other lights. These sorts of arrangements are common throughout many different industries.

mysterious ‘OEM’? Well, if ya can’t divulge I can live with it too. 8)

So you’re saying that absolutely FandyFire doesn’t make a Skyray King even if they have their own factory making other lights that they indeed sell? Ok. Sounds reasonable. Well whomever that OEM is who puts the FandyFire name on my SR King clones in name only, keep up the great work, great QA inspection, and if there’s a FandyFire QA representative that checks over these lights before they go out of the OEM’s factory, you’re doing a great job too.

I don’t have any extra secret information with special sauce. All I can do is relay the substance of a quick discussion I had with Shenzhen Blackshadow Technology Co. What they told me was:

1) their engineers designed and produced the original Sky Ray King
2) they manufacture both the UV-S5, as well as the black SRK that CNQG sells
3) they don’t use the Sky Ray name anymore because they were unable to register it
4) in addition to the BlackShadow branded range, they now manufacture a range of SolarStorm branded lights, including the SolarStorm King.
5) they confirmed that there are indeed substandard Sky Ray King “fakes” on the market

I did some more poking and prodding to the Tmart SRK’s. The better one is 1700 lumens, 7300K. The other one is 1450 lumens, 6300K.

There is a problem with the battery section of one of them. The springs are a good 1/8” too short. The cells barely stick up above the top of the base and rattle around. I severely doubt that all of them are making contact. That would explain why I sometimes see only 1100 lumens out of it.

This is very informative-thanks!

I got mine directly from a seller in china, the odd thing i noticed is one of the 4 cells is on a shorter spring than the other. i noticed that one of the spring cells is shorter than the others. i’ll try and post some pictures for you guys to see, is it the same for everyone.

I've got an original SRK (from lightmalls), and it had one spring shorter as well. It's not really a problem, I just pull the spring up with a needlenose until they're even, easy fix.
