Lighting

I have a question for yall . I’m a flint knapper.. and modder…what would be your opinion on the LED lighting that would show the best iridescent reflection without glare as you can see in the video.. this is Mr lumencraft Matt’s knife in tha making

Given the way light works, I think that every light source produces glare on certain surfaces. How shiny/reflective is the irridescence on the knife? I imagine warmer colirs would probably show less glare/washing out, or perhaps a periphery style light like a ring light or a light bar.

Also, the angle at which you shine the light is going to make a difference, perhaps try a light box where everything is bright?

Maybe it was the cheap ring I got

Lightbox!

Not a photographer but my polarising sunnies cut down reflections from glass, so perhaps try a polarising filter?

2 Thanks

That’s what I was wondering

Light box .,.cool wonder what type of light source . thanks for your help

Well, I can’t be of much help, but here’s how a semi iridescent material, under a reflective glass, looks with directional lighting vs. Ceiling bounce/indirect/ambient lighting.

Directional:

Ambient:

You’re probably going to have to move the camera or subject around to catch the iridescence properly, but you shouldn’t have the issue that I did with the reflective glass.

With the omnidirectional lighting, it should essentially have light coming in at every angle, so you could just put the subject on a turn table and have it rotate as you change the angle that you’re taking the pictures at until you catch maximum iridescence…funny thing too, it won’t look the same to your eyes because you have 2 combined viewing angles instead of just the one from the camera…it will probably look alot more pronounced in person.

Typically, I’m not one to volunteer other people’s knowledge or assistance, but in my opinion, @TkoK83Spy has some level of mastery in controlling the lighting in his shots, whether post or raw. Same with @RPD_macro.
