Hey BLFers, here is my video review and demonstration of some lights Crystal from LightsCastle sent me. I guess I was one of the few who said they’d happily do bike light reviews. This is one of three she sent me. This is a very objective overview of some super cheap lights you could throw on your bike if you needed to. A big plus is that it takes a second to swap lights and no tools required for battery replacement. I have had these lights on for nearly 26 hours and they still are going. They’re about at 50% or so of original brightness. I would surmise that if you used one of the blinky modes, which a lot of people do- you could get really long runtimes out of the light. I used the constant on mode for my test. Anyway this set of lights is 5ish shipped. Each light uses 2 CR2032 batteries.
Without further ado. Here is the video. I made it short and funny.
I agree. These are definitely cheapo “gift lights.” I prefer bigger more powerful lights for headlights that can handle Nimh or Li-ion rechargeables. One other big plus of these lights is the silicone construction. They stay exactly where you put them and don’t move if you hit bumps.
That is a fun product, and I bet it is especially targeted at the dutch market (tiny country, 14 million bicycles). The packaging even mentions "fiets lamp", I do not know any other language that calls a bicycle "fiets". Over here there is hardly any road without enough ambiant light to cycle (at least not near the cities) so you do not need your light to illuminate the road ahead, you just want to be seen. And regulations here require a white front light and red rear light, giving enough light to be seen, and is what these do. Actually the best sold lights, here in Amsterdam at least, is one that is very similar, just a bit less fancy: attachment is the same, runs on 2 x 2032 batteries, sold for 4 euro's (~5 dollars). People here do not even bother changing the batteries when they run out, they just buy a new pair of lights . Here's a picture, and one attached (to actually a pram to show them):
You learn something new every day. I like how the packaging is a combination of Dutch, Chinese, and English! So this is a package made for that regulation. Throw them away? Well at least these are easy to take apart. This isn’t a bad price as long as it’s free shipping there. I have another review or two coming of some similar lights that you can attach to the front for people looking at you from the side, and a rear light that includes LASERS!
I’ve got some of these. . Very cheap and do the job, and flexible as you can put them anywhere. Kind of cool putting one of the white ones on the front along side a couple of flashlights.
