I’m currently looking for a replacement for it as it will most of the time live in the pen slot of my backpack. Does anyone have any recommendations? Here is my criteria:
Budget <= 50 USD. Ideally 20-30 USD but I don’t mind spending a bit more up to 50. I don’t care about materials just aluminum is fine.
15mm diameter. I think 16mm might fit it but it’s already a bit tight with 15mm. Length wise it can be a bit longer but I think 2x10440/AAA is too long.
Working clip when you do the 1/4 turn. As this is in a pen slot, I’m ok doing the 1/4 turn to disable the light. Alternatively like the light in the image, having it harder to activate works as well.
One mode for UI is fine if it’s 50-100 lumen, something that makes sense. Also OK with L-M-H if the L is <=10 lumen, M is 50-200 lumen and H is >200 lumen.
Decent neutral emitter with high CRI? 4000-5000k with 90 CRI+. Ideally 519a or something like that.
Ideally USB-C? I have used a lot of alkaline cells and it looks like the cell just had issues and killed the light? Not sure how hard it would be to get lithium primaries when travelling around the world so I guess having internal charging wouldn’t be bad? Or is it recommended I just remove the batteries when not in use?
I have never heard of them before but I do like the 10440 with USB-C in it. My main concern is that they are a new brand. I’ve also heard complaint of the button being mushy.
If you want a similar replacement, Killzone Flashlights sells basically the same model, with upgraded LED.
No idea if a USB-C 10440 cell would fit, I’m afraid, also if anything like the original, these get hot on lithium cells.

Yes this looks like an alkaline cell leaked. Why not use NiMh?
Depends where you are travelling, due to my work, I’ve been to places in developing countries that no tourists would ever visit, alkaline cells are always available but I’ve never seen lithiums. if you use the light infrequently, load it up with a lithium before your trip and take a spare?
I do see the appeal of rechargeable 10440, however.
I keep meaning to try an Edoluc, there was a pre-sale here for the one you link to in polished titanium that looked great.

Unfortunately a few people started slamming Edoluc for their design, saying the lights were Reylight copies. But though there are similarities I fail to see any direct copying on any models.
Like the man above says, you can get another Killzone light. Being in the UK there’s a flat refusal from Killzone to ship here, and I’ve wanted one for ages due to the excellent emitters.
I originally did. I was told that when storing lights you use infrequently in extreme environments, it’s better to use primary cells instead. I remember having a conversation about putting lights in glove boxes or trunks and that is what people recommend. I eventually switched over and here we are.
That is an option too. I’ve never seen lithium primaries so I wasn’t sure if there are a pain to get access to begin with though. Do lthiums have any downside for storage or infrequent usage?
I’ve seen the same. I’ve only pushed back because they’re new and some comments that the button is mushy.
You very likely have seen them before. I believe Energizer has a kind of monopoly on the AA and AAA sizes of 1.7V primaries, they’re silver and blue, usually branded as “Ultimate Lithium”. They can handle subfreezing temps very well, but as with most cells, don’t really like the heat. The can last a LONG time in standby or storage, and are amazing for low to mid current applications while maintaining capacity (up to 500mAh). Some members here have likely done an in depth review of them before.
If you don’t mind an upgrade to your original light, as @gravelmonkey mentioned, Killzone Flashlights has a direct replacement. If you don’t mind something thicker, the Emisar KR1AA or d3AA are also highly recommended, either with High CRI variants and can run on both 14500 and NiMH/AA.
I didn’t realize those are Lithium. I’ve been using Costco Alkalines.
Yeah I may just consider the direct upgrade. The pocket only fits 15mm diameter so I can’t upgrade in that way. I may consider the Pineapple pen since it looks like the clip is screwed on?
Kind of, lol…I was wondering if you’d be able to transfer the guts (or at least the LED) into another light. I have a single AAA light I’m not using, but the LED is pukey green. From what I remember, the LED in the blf steel is a 219, a welcome improvement over the pukey green, IF you could transfer the LED over
take a look at the Emisar KC1. the cheapest hank. 13usd base price, 1 mode twisty. a few led options, with warm hi cri like 519a dedomed and also w1 if u want throw and power. aaa and 10440 im pretty sure. look at the LuxWad video on it.
