Does it have spring? Looks like it do, so OK then, but no really low modes and programmable…
Its the 12-group driver, so its programmable. And you can disable memory so it always starts in lowest mode. Groups 2,7, or 10 FTW.
If you haven’t ordered yet, I recommend the assorted TIR pack. Also, the TIR will drop the CCT a few hunder K, so 5000K → 4700K etc. I think the 5700K is the nicest
Yeah already ordered it. But that’s ok. It has the good old tail clicky, so the family members can use it. I’ll still have my SC700D for me to use, well my backup one, while the other one gets repaired for the immediate stepdown issue. I’m not bashing my SC700D. I love it! Just I need something that was a simple.alternative. I can’t expect much from a $30.00 light compared to a $120.00, but that is a given. I think the new Convoy will be an excellent edition to the collection.
I really enjoyed my S21D in 519A, especially with the 30 degree TIR. There isn’t much of a difference between the 30 and 60, as the light is a flooder in general. Low isn’t particularly low when paired with the 8A buck driver, but it does last quite a while. I usually stuck with mode 2, disabling mode memory.
That’s great to hear! I was reading a lot of reviews and many claim it’s an amazing flashlight for the price. The other cool thing is, since it’s a Convoy, I can repair it/mod it whenever the occasion arises. I hear that the Nichia 519A is a really great emitter. 5000K seems like a good balance for tint, while getting that high CRI fix. I used to be a die hard 6500K cool white only. However, as I’ve grown older, I have lost the love for 6500k, and want something a bit less harsh on the eyes with decent color rendition. 4500-5000K is my new preference.
I was going to suggest the Convoy S21D but you already picked it! I have one myself with 3500K 519A’s and it’s honestly gorgeous. I do agree with others about getting the multi pack of TIR’s for it though, so you can change the beam to whatever you want.
I personally went for the 30 degree beaded optic and it makes a beautifully smooth and wide beam. Be careful when changing the optics, as I partially seperated a dome from one of the 519A’s, so one of the four is showing quite rosy which has made the beam even nicer so it’s no loss for me.
Definitely get the 8A version as that uses a far more efficient Buck driver, when compared to the higher power 12A driver which IMO is completely unnecessary. You can also install the Convoy deep carry clip or a backlit metal button too, but they have a fairly high standby drain. Being a Convoy, replacement parts are a dime a dozen, so no worries if it breaks!
I ordered a pair with 8ACC, 10Deg, No diffusion, changed order from 519A 5000K to 519A 5700K as someone said that tint is really awesome close to pure daylight. Sadly, the AliExpress Convoy store didn’t have any options to order it with a clip/metal buttons or a set of TIR optics. If you have a third party place where I could order those components, I’d much appreciate a link. Thank you!
Actually found the TIR lens kit on the AliExpress Convoy site. I had to dig deeper.
Ok, so I’m looking at the metal lighted switches… I’m not sure what is the best color to get. They even have an RGB one, but I am told it stops being RGB when the battery hits 70-80%… What do you guys think is the best option? Id imagine RGB would have the highest mA draw, and that could be a huge con.
Decided to skip the lighted metal LED Switch. I don’t like the fact it will drain batteries. I did however, order two clips, a 10 pack of backup O-rings, and 2 sets of the 4 pack TIR optics kit.
I like the S21A and have been exploring different emitter options. So far, the B35AM at 4500K has the best beam profile. It’s “just right” between forest and field at night for my walks.
While I like 4500K at night when there is lots of moonlight, and it balances nicely as an all-purpose color temperature for EDC; I otherwise want a warmer light at night. So I tried the S21A with B35AM at 2700K. While I like the tint better on a cloudy night, it doesn’t reveal as much to my eyes and the pattern doesn’t look as good.
Maybe I will try some different optics.
Did you consider the Emisar D1K (often called “the poor man’s SC700”)? It’s available with XHP 70.3 HI and 50.3 HI high CRI emitters in all the colour temps. Nice and efficient boost driver but slightly less bright than the SC700D.
If you stick to Anduril2’s “simple mode” the UI is actually pretty … simple.
…and now on sale 30$
Just XHP70.3, there’s no option for XHP50.
XHP 50.3 is available via the “secret menu”, i.e. you have to email Hank and ask.
The DM11 has all the available 50.3 HIs in the menu.
Ok so I received the Convoy S21D with the 519A 5700k tint. My impression on it? FANTASTIC! The Nichia 519A in 5700k is nearly perfect sunlight! The tint is awesome!! I love this light! Simon knows how to build a flashlight! The 8 amp version has springs on both the driver and the tail. Attaching pics.
I just checked that one out. That’s a cool light! I’ll have to consider getting one of those in the future! Thanks for the suggestion!
In my experience finding the light switch in complete darkness was very difficult. The ergonomics on that front are horrible compared to the Zebralight where your finger falls perfectly in place over the switch. I would consider the Emisar D4K with the boost driver and Nichia 519a LED of your choice.
Thanks for that suggestion as well! I’ll look into that one. After getting my hands on this new Nichia 519 LED, I think I’m done with Cree variants!
