Undoubtedly a fake so I won’t be buying, I was looking for SanRenMu’s and that came up as one of the alternatives. :quest:
I don’t usually buy fixed blades, a few work knives maybe. The last fixed blade that I bought just for the hell of it was a Cold Steel Tanto Lite.
You can buy anything you like, depending upon your budget, but let me say there are numerous excellent knives for sometimes much less than $50 that meet the criteria for rugged “survival ” knives.
“Survival” is like “Tactical”…attach that to the name, and voila! you can charge 25% more for it! Also, the “survivalists”, or ’woodcraftsmen” on YouTube who routinely beat hell out of good knives “batoning”, or other examples of woodsmanlike machismo seem somewhat removed from reality. But, it impresses the pilgrims! It did me! :cowboy_hat_face:
Bring a hatchet, for pete’s sake! Use a knife for knife stuff, and another proper tool for the heavier items. A saw, even the wire ones, give a better return for energy expended than do knives or axes! But, they’ re not “kewl!”
If you can afford them, The big name custom knifemakers’ offerings, or Randall knives are still some of the best, but for us mere mortals…
For heavy-duty…Look at the SCHRADE SCHF-9 or 10 knives .
The Buck 119 is also a good choice
The KaBars are good knives
Mora “Robust” series…not the “survival” designated ones, are cheap, and even the “survival” designated blades, which are more expen$ive won’t break the bank, either.
Schrade “Old Timer” or “Uncle Henry” are good, rugged choices, for a reasonable expenditure of $$$.
There are lots more!
But, I know, not much GEE Whiz factor there. ![]()
I just found this under 8steve88’s full tang search. It looks like a Ka-Bar and says it’s an “OEM Ka-Bar” but…is it?
If so it’s a very good deal and I want one!
I think it’s only a fake more… or crappy copy.
No, it isn’t a “real” Ka-Bar! It is advertised as having a stainless blade, and the real ones all had high-carbon blades, but, even so, it may be a good deal. The real, or as close as you can get nowadays costs more than twice that. However, it may be a good knife, despite its origins and price. It is possible to “win the lottery” from offshore sources, but, is somewhat chancy, IMO.
You like it, buy it…chances are, you will not be able to tell the difference, and probably will not put it to the severe use that the originals were through WWII, Korea, and beyond. If you do, or try to emulate the YouTube heroes, it just may reveal some inherent flaw or lack of true quality. But, if you consider it a “training knife”, it will be O.K.
My philosophy is: buy as good and inexpensive as you can, and if you find yourself using it all the time, and it won’t hold an edge, or otherwise doesn’t perform, then buy the more expensive model.
But, its all good fun! Watch it tho; Them things are sharp! 8)
I have a couple of these and beat them to death.
They sharpen to almost surgical sharp in a heartbeat ( i can only vouch for the carbon steel)
If you can kill them, you are REALLY hard on a knife.
You could buy three for under 50usd. Made in Sweden!

I’d agree with that. I bought a Hultafors Heavy Duty knife a couple of years ago for around £6, yuo have to really want to kill it to break one.
Somebody re-handled one (it’s a damn good blade for £6, high carbon steel) Bushcraft U.K.
They’re still only £5.95 there’s some good combo’s as well.
I second the Mora! I have the Companion MG Heavy Duty and that is a heck of a knife for less than $20!
Yes, mora are a very good option, but only for cutting.
I like the stainless steel if you use for food. The companion mg is ok.
It’s not. Genuine Ka-Bars are made in USA Ka-Bars and are inexpensive as well. The copies are cranked out in China for a few bucks each. A real Ka-Bar is worth every additional penny.
