Hey guys,
Have a kid who’s scared of the dark. I have some red flashlights and a lamp from SkyLumen but nothing that will last approx 12 hours.
I’m thinking maybe a D18 in red, but I’d love any ideas! All battery types are good. Maybe a 26800
Hey guys,

The D18 is not particularly efficient as it uses a FET driver, the D4Sv2 can use 26800 and has an option for a boost driver (very efficient).
Depending on the brightness you need, a Sofirn LT1S could work, it uses a 5000mAh 21700.
A higher capacity alternative could be getting a LT1 modded to have one of the channels be SST20-red (preferably 5000k), the battery capacity can be very high if you use the right cells (14Ah using 3500mAh 18650s) but the minimum level is not as low.
Both LT1 versions also has the advantage of working while plugged into USB-C, so that could entirely remove the runtime problem.
I just bought some LED 12” strips with red emitters from Amazon, they claim at 12V .07A it makes a thousand lumens. Any decent 12V source ought to run a single 12” strip for a good while, the glow from indirect viewing is substantial. There are 18 5050 sized emitters in a 12” tube.
This is two of the tubes as powered by a 12V regulated pack. They sell for like $13 for four tubes, have 3M adhesive on the back of the tube. Multiple color options including red, blue, amber…
I’ll dig out the pertinent stuff if you think these strips might be what you’re looking for.
You guys are great, thank you.
Although I have a lot of white flashlights of varying color temperature, I’m not good at estimating the brightness and lumens of red lights. But just off the top of my head, I would think 50 lm would be more than enough. She’s actually afraid and going to the bathroom at night because of those ‘toilet wolves.’
Wouldn’t that make a great name for a band?
Toilet wolves…
I like that!
When I was a kid, I saw the Jaws movies, and I thought that a great white shark would somehow get me through the toilet.
I also thought that a great white shark would smash through the bottom of a pool that I would swim in and get me.
Now I’m almost 47 years old, and I still have an irrational fear of great white sharks, and will only go in the ocean at about waist high.
I know that I’m not safe even if my upper body is above water, but I feel a bit safer if I don’t go very far into the ocean.

You just need some nightlights. Huge waste of money to get something battery powered for this. If I understand the situation correctly.
Have you never seen a nightlight? Cost like $5. Leave it plugged it 24/7. Uses like 25 cents worth of electricity in a year
Nice!! I just ordered them
Ha yep me too. They have those electronic shark shield devices that go around your ankle but the good old inverse square law makes me doubt that electric field propagates very far.
That’s not an irrational fear. It’s very rational to be fearful of great white sharks lol
Ha true. Being afraid of kittens might be considered irrational.
I’ll be damned if I can figure out how you guys are quoting other people’s posts in this new user interface
I highlighted that part of your post, and pushed reply
That’s awesome dude thank you
Thanks from me too.
I like the $1 night light from the dollar store idea and a 0.25 cent piece of red filter . Problem
solved
Sort of depends. I’m more likely to be around a kitten, while I’m not getting into water with known shark activity, so the kitten is more likely to actually injure me. I guess I’d say scared enough to treat respectfully and carefully, but not panicking because one is present.
Dude these lights are awesome. I have them plugged in all over the house
I knew a girl who was literally afraid of cats/kittens. Like jump on the table screaming type afraid - as some might be of rodents and cockroaches.

[/quote] Some people complain they’re more pink than red. They claim they use a red LED so I wonder if they changed them possiblybefore they were using a white LED with a red lens. I don’t actually have them but I am considering getting them because I have one spot I could use it. So are they good and red or pinkish. Might be good to actually explain to the kid the science behind the night vision and the red light and easily falling back to sleep if she has to get up. Maybe even explain that some animals can’t see the Red without bringing up the monsters.
