Looking for something glow-sticki'ish in electronic LED shape, glo-toobi'ish and such

Perhaps not the right subforum?

Anyway, Ive been thinking about need to buy something that is similar to glow stick, but obviously runs off batteries and uses LED's to create light.

I would either hang it or attach it to the steel surface in case it comes with magnet built in like those 18650 cylindrical SMD camping lights and use it for close area illumination in the dark, either in red or orange/amber color.

Beacon feature is also interesting thing in case need to find camp site when away in the dark, but not exactly a must. Super brightness is not must, long runtimes are.

Googled glo-toob, also its EDC clone, Krill electronic glow sticks and so far glo-toob looks like the most interesting and most glow-stick like light, most reliable as well.

However, simple and cheap police-style AA or any other flashlight could suffice with red or orange wand on top of it, also there seems to be flood of camping lights that are of the cylindrical shape of power bank with SMD LED's on one side and rechargeable low capacity 18650 inside and those are also cheap. Any personal experiences with above mentioned variants?

You’re in the right part… I think :stuck_out_tongue: I’m also really interested what you’re after but not so much as needing one lol

Yeah, its not like I MUST HAVE ONE, but Id like to have one as specific item, if such is available :D!

Werner - saw that one, its the one that spurred my curiosity :D! However it is green/blue one and the red one costs twice as much there and it also looks like its not glo-toob like, its more like some sort of regular thin plastic wrapped inside the tube, you can see it in the pictures of red one?

Glo toob costs around 20$ from Chinese vendors, not sure whether those are genuine or not and I would like to keep it below 10$ if possible.

Meh batteries for a glow tube is old school. Go for nuclear power: http://www.gearbest.com/outdoor-lanterns/pp_229500.html

Would like to steer clear from tritium vials, not bright enough for my needs as well as dont like the idea of carrying radiocative stuff around with me, even if one that cant penetrate skin.

I love tritium and titanium stuff like this. But if you prefer battery operated then i would suggest a glotoobe: http://www.glo-toob-usa.com/

Yeah, thats the one, but it costs 20-21$ shipped from China in AAA version and I have not found legit source that ships lithium version world wide and keeps the cost down on it.

Hence why this thread and might just end up using red/orange vand wand on top of regular NiMh or Lithium powered light, I already ordered couple of vands wands on Tinywind with their anniversary coupon code, one white one orange though, so depending on brightness orange one might turn into rather bright yellowish which isnt the best to preserve night vision.

Cr123 glotoob from banggood

I’ve used the amber Glo-Toob (12v cell version) for years, the little “doorbell” 12v alkalines seem to last about forever and I haven’t had one leak yet (I do worry about alkalines always).
These do all we need — tent lights, marker lights for trail bumps and pitfalls and low branches in the woods, looking inside bags, even reading in the tent, etc.
That kind do have way too many modes, I always have to remind myself how to reset them. But they do have mode memory, once I get them set to what I want.
Haven’t bought any of the newer battery kind because pricey.

make something like this
use an appropriate resistor to hit your output and runtime target.

I’m probably way off the mark, but what about the Thorfire KL02?

That one looks interesting and definitely not off the mark!
Only downside is its low’ish runtimes especially on 16340.

Perhaps a resistor swap would be possible to increase runtime?

With my soldering skill’s the smaller the parts the better to leave them be the way they are :D!

Home Depot was basically giving away what you want last year. Do you want one to play with? PM me your address, I have a bunch.

Daryan

Im from Europe so not sure it would work out, but thanks for offer :)!

The LazerBrite looks interesting, but is way out of the specified budget. Wonder if there are any clones.

Do you have any pictures? Might be easy to find on one of the usual websites.

Cylindrical power bank

+ usb light

+ 22mm diffuser

and for $4 you have variable brightness glow rube

I got a bunch of Life Gear LED glowstick + flashlights for around $3-$4 in various colors not long ago and they seem quite decent for the price. The glowstick part gives off a good amount of light, while the other end is a simple white LED when you need a bit more concentrated lighting. It has a 1 hour auto shutoff which could be an issue if you want to use it for campsite markers while away on an extended hike, but perhaps it can be modded? Might want to give it a shot if you haven’t found something more suitable.
