Huge fan of the form factor, brightness, battery life of my Convoy L6 XHP70 from 2017. But I feel like technology must have improved in the past 8 years.
Any recommendations for a 2025 upgrade? How is the Convoy L7? Wish it came in clear like my L6! USB charging would also be nice to have.
My Convoy L6 next to a Sofirn SC31T for reference.
If you want a lot more throw, you could get a flashlight with an SFT40 emitter.
Or, if you want a good mixture of flood and throw, you could get a flashlight with an SFT70 emitter.
If you don’t need much more throw than the XHP70, there is the XHP70.3 HI, but it might only be marginally better than the XHP70.
EDIT:
If you want a massive amount of lumens and throw, there’s the SBT90.2 emitter, but that emitter produces a lot of heat and doesn’t have very good runtimes.
The XHP70.3HI will throw a lot more than the gen 1 XHP70. Part of the improvement comes from being domeless, and part of it is the elimination of the dark cross in the center.
Also the SBT90.2 only produces a lot of heat when run close to maximum; the same can be said of any other emitter in its power class. It is a substantially better thrower than XHP70.3 HI; the tradeoff is that it is only available in cool white and tends to be green in low-mid levels.
I think my L6 XHP70 is already great in terms of mixture of throw and flood. My hope would be that a newer version would be more efficient, give off less heat, and have even longer runtimes.
The XHP70.3 HD might be a good option then. Or one of the San’an huge die emitters.
Thing is, LED efficiency hasn’t really been improving that much for the last couple of years. Most of the efficiency boost is coming from the engineering of the lights themselves, mostly from more efficient drivers and the availability of larger and larger LEDs, which are more efficient than smaller LEDs at very high drive levels due to the lower power density.
