It’s illegal to alter US currency with intent to defraud — to increase the apparent value.
You aren’t allowed, for example, to restamp a coin to make it look like it’s a rare collectible date or mint mark.
You aren’t allowed to drill holes in a silver or gold coin, fill them with lead, and sell the metal you drilled out.
