Are Mag 3C switches available from any source? Looking at the Mag website, it looks like they only sell the switch and barrel as a unit. I have the itch to modify a Mag, and I would like to have a spare in case the unthinkable happens, and I foul it up big time! ’Zennybody know if the 2 and 3 C cell maglights come in any colors besides basic black?
I have the 3-LED light fixture bulb featured in “My $2.24 mag mod”, and I have found a reflector/heat sink that looks like it will work for building another module, with a Cree emitter. I’m figuring to put a connector plug in the system between the switch and light module,so I can swap them out to compare them, or have a spare handy, orrrr…buy another 3C mag. 8)
I don’t think a driver will be necessary for the 3 LED mod; at least the fellow doing it didn’t say so, but what sort of driver should I buy for the Cree? Would it be possible to buy a multi-mode driver, and have it work through the Mag switch?
If you have a newer model maglite (“C” in the serial number), then this sort of thing should work:
(haven’t used them, but just googled maglite and the part number)
If it’s an old mag and you can’t find it online, then sometimes you can find people here or CPF that are willing to sell stuff.
If the link above includes the ‘barrel’ that you don’t want, then I think you’re up the proverbial creek, as I’ve never seen the switch itself done separately. Mods usually involve mangling the entire assembly, so you’d probably need the whole thing.
For the driver for the cree you’re talking about, it depends on the emitter (1 or many, parallel or series) and the voltage you want to feed it. Usually, 1 lithium ion battery and 1 emitter can be direct driven, but you won’t get modes.
To make a multimode driver work through the mag switch, you probably want to convert it to be a momentary switch. Our man OldLumens can help you here: Side switch host modded to momentary only?
Zbattery sells the switch+tube and that’s about the cheapest I’ve seen them go for.
I recall grey and purple Mag 2Cs were the last colors available and were around until 2008/2009. I feel like such a dingus now for not grabbing some when they were on store shelves
I rocker switch or even a standard clicky (right diameter of course) can be placed in the Mag switch housing. I butchered my switch in a "D" Mag and tried the rocker, didn't like it and moved to a standard clicky. This was on a "D" and I assume you could make the same work in a "C". I have photos if desired.
Can’t go wrong with Zbattery. I’ve purchased Mag parts from them half a dozen times over the last 7 years and have nothing but good things to say about my dealings with them.
