Maglites a geared to the general public and NOT us flashaholics (the general public GREATLY out number us).
I remember 40 years ago when I was a “gearhead”, I had a 1963 Chevy II and I put a 327 in it. It had all the goodies and it was quick, very quick. I spent every weekend fiddling with it. I loved it.
One day my friend came over to play golf. He opened his trunk and we threw my clubs in. As we drove off I became a little jealous. To him a car was just something to get from point A to point B………….
Maglite is in business to make money, and to make money they have to appeal to the widest group of consumers. That is what they are all about, it would be foolish to ignore them. Can you see the average granny trying to use an XM-L to find her keys? That is what MOST people use flashlights for. These lights we buy are already WAY to bright for them. Yes they are more advanced and brighter etc., but in the market place, Most advanced doesn’t always mean BEST.
BTW, my passion for cars passed one day, NOW it’s flashlights…….Yeah
Cars are always a great comparison to flashlights, you can mess about all you want but unless you gave won the lottery your shed built car will always have limitations, same with flashlights, other than us, no one would tolerate a light where the cells run the risk of turning the light into a pipe bomb, the host could be more of a torture instrument, the led does not fit the emitter, the heat sinking means the emmitter and/or driver happily cooks themselves if you leave them to it, the cells can deplete if you just let them discharge till turn off…….
We’re pretty specialized, the advantage is we get stupidly bright lights for little cash, but we have to be anal about checking run currents, cell voltages, host quality……
Maglite wins because you buy it, drop cells in and when you need it it lights up, I bet my dads 3d has not had cells in ten years, but I’m pretty confident that the damm thing will still light up if you hit the switch, not quite so confident about a p60 on an 18650 for argument’s sake.
Lol, the only light that has EVER broken on me is a rebel 2xAA maglite. D cells can have up to 18 Ah of power if drained really slowly, although Fenix says 12 hours for 350 lumens on 4 D’s, so Maglight’s regulation is probably piss poor.
Since we are educated, we know that max runtime would be 5hrs or much less because of constant brightness regulation, amperage increases with declining voltage. Prospective Maglite buyers arent aware of the poor performance and only know that "it is normal" that the light has to dim when the Alklines get depleted.
Tonight I’m modding my new incan Solitaire with a clear 20000mcd 5mm LED and a 14500. Wish I had a way to measure the lumens it puts out. I need to check with Erik if he put his in the I.S. after doing this mod on his Solitaire.
