The e-switch on my maglite magtac rechargeable seems to not work as intended. Sometimes you have to press it really hard for it to work, and other times I’ll lightly press it and it’ll start cycling through modes as if I clicked three times. Plus it’s a $100+ flashlight. Very disappointed with Maglite’s quality lately.
Forgot to mention, the LiFePo4 battery sucks. Its capacity is garbage, and if you try turning off the light when it’s really low on battery, it’ll get stuck on strobe, and won’t turn off until you unscrew the tail cap. What a waste of money.
Have you contacted Maglite about the problems? In the past they have been very good anytime I had a warranty issue. They (IIRC) have a 10 year warranty on their lights.
Mag isn’t real popular anymore, and not much on this forum since like the entire flashlight world passed them up in terms of features, output, and value. I think since all that happened, not too many people even mod/upgrade their old Maglites unless it’s just a fun project or for nostalgia.
If I’m not wrong, I think that switch which was in a few different models had tons of glitches, failures, and complaints. I’ve never had one in hand, but if it’s possible to do so, try disassembling so you can check for grime or loose fastening, etc…and if there are threads that are conducting the signal, be sure those are clean.
If you had to pay shipping both ways to Mag, you could darn near get a light for that same dollar amount that would blow this light way out of the water.
Didn’t contact them, nor do I want to. I’m done with this brand for good. It’s a couple of years old, but the battery life was pure garbage from the very first day. The only thing I like about it is the machining and the body’s build quality. It’s built like a tank.
No offense, but the flashlight doesn’t appeal to me, and $100+ seems pretty expensive for what you get.
You can get a much better flashlight for a fraction of that price.
The emitter is still a good one even all these years later after it was introduced. It’s not much of the cost in the whole light, though…probably like a buck or less depending on how they purchase. Most of the cost will be in the host machining and the driver (the real magic), plus things like assembly, warranty, and marketing…and surely Mag still puts some “premium markup” just on the brand name recognition. Some switches and reflectors/optics are pricier than the run of the mill stuff, too, but it’s still a low portion of the overall production costs. Way way overpriced for what you’re getting, but sometimes it’s worth it if you love it.
