I have purchased a few of these . They are straight dropins , no modding needed . At first they were bluish , cold white , later version is warmer . It basically turns your old Mag into a nice flooder . It works best with at least three cells .
I still use mine three years later .
EDIT : Google 'fusion 36' here on the forum , lots of good info from '10
Hey Jack, thanks a bunch for your reply. I was figuring this would get laughed at! I have seen a lot of mods for the Maglite, but not this one until now. I have a (3) D cell Maglite. It will be nice to use my Maglite as something besides a club now (not the steering wheel Club, hey, that might work also)
thanks for your assurance….
I kind of doubt even the 400 minimum lumen is close to actual.
I would think you would get better results at $15 for an led bulb, or $25 +/-$5 for a cheap multi-emitter xpe/xpg/xml drop in.
Showerheads are a do not buy. They all too often are overdriven 5mm led’s and within a few dozen hours of use permanently lose like half their brightness.
You’d be lucky to hit 400 lumens even with fresh batteries and then it’ll drop as I’ve said from having those tiny led’s overdriven.
You’re better off just getting a dedicated high power LED flashlight. $26 can easily buy you an XM-L flashlight that would easily outshine that drop-in.
Those multi-5mm designs were the hot ticket, way back before the 1W Luxeons came along. There are better options now.
When I first heard of these dropins , I was intrigued by the pure flood aspect . So I bought one , and it was loads better than the incan bulb it replaced . The later dropins had a better (warmer) tint . The beam produced by these dropins is a wide field of light with a barely discernible hotspot . Several friends saw my light and wanted their own dropins . I purchased several more for them , and as far as I know , all of the dropins I bought back in '10 are working still . I also made some 1" PVC sleeves for their lights so that they could run 4Cs in a 3D or 5Cs in a 4D , for a little more voltage and therefore , light . So if you put one of these sleeves in a 4D Maglite , you increase the weight , and probably the strength of the body tube itself .
Yes , for the money there are better light sources available .
I keep my Fusions Mags in my vehicles as both a light source and as legal billy clubs .
I have three of these and I bought one for my neighbor. All four of them are at least three years old, and still going strong. If you already have old Mags lying around, they are a good deal. I have no way of measuring quantitatively, but on two 18650s in a 2D Mag it is easily 500 lumens. They’re 3-4 times brighter than a Mag LED, and they give a great flood beam for short to medium range work. Mine have spent many nights competently illuminating landmines planted by my dog, so they can be properly disposed of.
Hoo BOY! That makes me want to run right out and buy another Mag to put it in!

Lol! Still something about a Mag! It was my first flashlight. I still have it. Its a 3D I ordered out of the Gall’s catalog in 1986 at the age of 12! The incans are starting to get tougher to find in some places.
