Mod: LuckySun F3X

Fixed my A17DD S08 driver, cell is charging to get some numbers.

I actually took the time to double check the driver and re-flowed it again to be sure, works like a charm. 7 levels with a decent low, can’t wait to see what the 3 W2 1D’s do.

Edit: Not surprisingly the output is lower than I might have thought. I used 22ga wires to fit under the triple reflector and didn’t bypass the tail spring intentionally. On a fresh charged Efest 26650 3500mAh cell it makes…

0.05A for 21.44 Lumens
0.14A for 54.51
0.24A for 123.165
0.67A for 336.375
1.82A for 979.8
3.09A for 1490.4
6.82A for 2632.35

Worthy to note that when I modifed power from the original driver to the original XM-L’s, it was doing 6.10A and making 1825.05 lumens. So the XP-L W2 1D’s are certainly making a difference at the amperage involved.

I could probably stand to do just a bit more fitting on the new reflector to allow it to seat deeper. I didn’t do much to it after I inset the Cu pill that 4-5mm so it’s sitting a bit high. I’ve got a wee gap under the SS bezel…

Maybe y’all have heard me talk about the LiNiMnCo cell from Powerizer in the past, I got Tom E on them and he loved em, both of us wish we’d bought more while they were available… they’ve been discontinued for a couple of years. Anyway, I got the Efest 3500mAh cell charged back up and tested the F3X again, this time I got 7.06A for 2701.35 lumens, better with the reflector down onto the emitters, but still relatively low.

So I charged up one of my last remaining LiNiMnCo cells from Powerizer (Battery Space, but like I said, they no gottee). With this particular cell, the F3X pulls 9.95A and makes 3256.8 lumens. A 555 lumen increase by swapping cells! I do believe I’ll take it!

Dale, what do you mean by this comment, ā€œI didn’t actually say anything about a triple XHP-50ā€
I need to head out, but will get back to you about this, are you referring to something I may have mentioned?
Please clarify for me, thanks and the light is really something else, you are so gifted, wow.

In post #39 it appears that you were quoting me about going big with a triple XHP-50, what I actually said was to make a large thrower, which would be a single emitter light.

Thanks, I’m pretty pleased with how it’s turned out. It’s got a pleasing heft to it and with good balance. A little over 3000 lumens and it’s 3 times more powerful than when I got it. (drawing 4 times more current!)

Yes it does appear that I was mentioning some of your thoughts about XHP50’s, because I was…
I might be in my 60’s but I do know how to cut and paste and frankly in our message that I referenced you actually said nothing about any single emitter light, well hold on now, OK semantics is that what this is called when you made the comment regarding LS making a bolder statement like the HD2010/Courui D01 slayer, or…. single emitter lights .??
You know, I say metal, and it creates a freak out, I say XHP50 and I’m basically making things up, when in reality you said you might consider XHP50’s if the tubes weren’t so messed up.
So, I guess if someone wants to step up and I’ll introduce you to Eason at Lucky Sun and I am going to do what I do best and this is not it,
Fairly dismissive, great job…!! And your welcome I guess…

Wait, did I miss something?

I was the (likely fool) mentioning triple XHP50s. I bought the F3X thinking I could fit them in there.

The XHP50s fit perfectly in the reflector, but the reflector to pill spacing is really bad for that idea, and I don’t have DB Custom’s ability to make a pill, or djozz’s ability to modify an MCPCB.

The idea was to make a light that was ridiculously bright for a few seconds, nothing more.

I mentioned them too, and dismissed them.

ā€œI may consider using both tubes and going with 3 XHP-50’s in this light, but the aesthetics of the mismatched tubes will probably stop me from doing that. It’d be awesome, for sure, probably over 6000 lumens. As much as I like big power, the light has to also look good for me, so that’s probably out.ā€

I can copy and paste with the best of em… (and since this is my own quote from our conversation, I am free to do so)

And that was also in consideration towards modding the F3X, not anything bigger. The bigger light I asked about them building as a possibility was aimed at outdoing the HD2010 and/or Courui D01, hence the term HD2010 Slayer.

I have already built D80 XHP-50 lights and I’ve built Quad XHP-50 D80’s, in my experience it will take a very large light to disperse the heat associated with running multiple 6V emitters, so I didn’t really consider it for the Lucky Sun F3X, not even for a moment.

I wish I had your ability to assess lights, I went and bought 3 XHP50s on 10mm MCPCBs from RMM. That and the drivers and a few other bits cost me $60, and I don’t have anything I can use them for now.

In my defense, I didn’t have a way to tear the light apart while I was deployed back then.

Thank You Dale

Does anyone know the spacing of the emitters on this light? I’ve been looking for a good, inexpensive, starting point for a reflector 3x SST-40 build. This light is an attractive option, but I don’t think I’m up for the tedium and risk of a MCPCB mod like djozz did, and I’m trying to figure out other options for mounting and heat-sinking the LEDs.

^ I can have a look when I’m home for the exact spacing but the leds are pretty close together and I don’t think this matches any existing DTP board, at least not the often used Cute3 spacing or Carclo 105 series spacing for which Noctigons are available.

Agree with djozz, it’s an odd spacing and not common to any of our other lights to my finding.

Thanks in advance for checking. Does the the Sofirn C8F mcpcb have the same spacing as the Noctigon XP32?

No, it does not. They made a proprietary triple mcpcb to go with their reflector and it’s not the same as what Hank used for his 32mm Noctigon that works with CUTE-3 Optics. This is a bit of a pita but it can be modified by using individual mcpcb’s and gluing them down with a thermal epoxy like Arctic Alumina or such.

More work, but then that’s the fun of modding lights, right?

I’m really feeling this mod and light…stealer workmanship!!!
That DTP is on another level. in this one thread I just learned a bunch of new info. Thank you.

I don’t know if Keith is still watching this, but with new boost drivers coming out soon it might be feasible to use a single 26650 with 3 XHP-50’s or 50.2’s in this light. Sure, it’d get hot, but it’d be fun to play with and if you live in a cold climate that goes a long way towards dealing with the extra heat.

Edit: As an incentive, I put 3 XHP-50.2’s in Rey’s Ti X6 and it makes close to 10,000 lumens on 2 Aspire 18350’s.

^ In the OP I promised not to do such a DIY DTP build again, but I still have one F3X unmodded and that boost driver idea with 3xXHP50.2 sounds really attractive. My concern is however if the leds are going to survive the boost driver, I have one XHP50.2 killed already in a light with a KD H1-A driver and I have heard more stories of XHP50.2 leds dying from (to me unknown) stuff generated by drivers.

Richard is working on one that should be very stable, Lexel probably has one already as well and Texas Ace too. LoneOcean’s was working on several but I don’t know if his are ready. At any rate, these guys build for stability and reliability so you should be able to count on them.

In a triple configuration a Zener modified FET driver doesn’t kill the 50.2’s, that’s what I have in my Ti X6.
