Modded 6P vs 6PX or P2X Fury

For the past few years as a midnight cop in a big city I’ve carried a 9P and a 6P as a back-up, both modded with DealExtreme drop in’s and AW 17XXX cells. I’m now in the specialized training school for ESU in my department and as I’m stepping it up and hitting the holy grail of my department I’d like to step up my lights to be on par with what will be my everyday tasks in ESU, everything from SWAT to rescue and in between. I’d like to carry 2 versatile, bulletproof 6P sized lights, one will be my go to light and the other in my pocket as a back-up (w/ a high/low featur and bezel down pocket clip), both with momentary/twist tail caps.

I was originally thinking of picking up a 6P host and a bored body (for my current 6P) as well as drop in’s and cells. But, these new Surefire X series lights look very intriguing because they have tons of output and would not need to be modded so there will be no question of reliability. I could carry a combination of 2 6PX’s (tac & pro) or 2 P2X Fury’s (the dual-mode & tac) or for a great all around set up of having 3 awesome outputs, I could carry a 6PX Tactical as my go to and a P2X Fury as my back up which would give me a total of 200, 15 and 500 lumens!

I currently have a Pila charger and some AW 17500 and 17670 cells. Could 17670’s be run in these newer lights without a problem? What about having them bored out for 18650’s? What will runtime’s and output be like on the various rechargables? I obviously want the longest runtime and the most output. Being a newbie and coming from CPF I purchased AW cells as they came highly regarded, are there other reliable cells that you guys recommend? What about other chargers?

Besides liking the aesthetic badassness of the ‘old’ 6P’s vs these newer style SF lights, is there any reason why I shouldn’t go with these newer lights vs modding some 6P’s? Could I realistically mod 2 6P’s to have the same versatility and reliability of running a combo of these newer lights for the same investment???

Will these newer SF X series lights fit in the same holsters designed for 6P lights?

I have a bezel down Blackhawk holster which I love and would like to continue using.

Are there any bezel down pocket clips for these newer lights? (…for the back up)

If I go with 6P lights, which drop in will suite me best as my main light? I need something BRIGHT, dependable and versatile. Something that can run on both rechargables (18650’s?) and regular SF primaries if need be. Tint is not really of a concern. What will runtimes be like?

What about a high/low drop-in for my back-up???

Sorry for all the questions, but I’m a newbie looking for a GOOD reliable set-up. Because of the nature of the unit I’ll be in, I need the ultimate in performance and reliability. Nothing finnicky or unreliable at all will suffice.

Was a cop for 20+ years.
Started carrying a Kel-Lite 5 “D” cell.
Now I tell others about SolarForce model L2m with an after market 1,000 lumen drop-in from Kaidomain. A true bargin at about $28.00 total.

Does your department give out CR123a cells? If so you would limit any possible liability if you use stock Surefire lights and CR123a primaries. If not then I’d go with a pair of bored 6P lights with a Malkoff in one and a potted Nailbender drop-in in the other. You’ll have to test the tail cap to make sure it works with the bored body as some twisty tail caps work fine and some don’t. Also, I would NOT consider boring a C2 or Z2 or any of the variants as the wall thickness is getting to be paper thin on those when bored. That includes the M3.

Thanks for the recommendations…

Honestly, I think I’m leaning away from the ‘cheap’ hong kong and Chinese hosts. I really just want the most solid and reliable package that I can get, hence wanting to bore out 6P’s or go to the 6PX or P2X variants

Unfortunately my department does not give us primaries which is why I want to go the rechargable route and have some primaries as back-up’s just incase. Can the newer 6PX/P2X series SF lights be bored out for 18650’s like the 6P can?

With the right drop in solarforces are just as reliable as a surefire. While being much brighter and cheaper. The l2p for example is HAIII, has a 3 amp switch and accepts any p60 drop in so it could be brighter than the p2x fury. It also gives you mode choices, you could get 1 mode or 5 mode or even one that is only strobe.

I’ll have to take a look at that.
Which drop-in is that exactly on kaidomain?

I believe he is talking about this one. However my recommendation would be to buy one from E1320, he makes 5 mode drop ins with your choice of LED tint, reflector type, and max amperage. They are Moonlight-Lo-Med-Hi-Turbo with memory.

Anyone have any more input in the newer SF lights?

The majority of the people here don't like surefires and prefer cheaper and brighter alternatives. If you have a specific question we can probably find the answer for you though.

Not many here have experience with the newest lights from Surefire. Someone posted a similar question on CPF and there’s been only one reply that it works fine. What wasn’t said was how the run times were or even if it was dimmer than with 2 CR123a cells. Also, boring any Surefire light will void their warranty so I hesitate to recommend doing that. My opinion is that you should go with an older 6P if you’re absolutely convinced that 18650s are the way to go or get the Solarforce L2P with their momentary twisty tail cap.

Welcome to your new home, forumname05!

If I do go with one of these SF’s…
Would I be better off running 2x 123’s or a 17670 rechargable? Or would it be possible to even bore for an 18650?…Obviously I’m not too concerned with the warranty.
Would a single cell offer less output and runtime or would it be the same as two cells?

That depends on the surefire. If you are talking about a 6p and then putting in your own p60 drop in then 16650 would be best as they have 220 mah capacity. If you are talking about the Fury or the 6px then it is best to use 2 cr123s as those need the extra voltage. Or of course if you feel like spending a lot of money then the r1 Lawman could be perfect for you.

Which brand cells and charger do you guys recommend?
I currently have a Pila charger and a few AW 17670’s and 17500’s

The pila should be able to do everything you need.

How would I go about charging a 123 cell with the Pila?

17670’s would diminish output, correct?

What light are you talking about? To charge a 16340 in the pila you need to make a CR123A sized spacer like I did here. (The easy way is a screw going through a wooden dowel)

I mean a 17670 in the 6PX or P2X Fury

Then yes. As I understand it that will cause lower output but longer runtime. You can also use lifepo4 rcr132s in it and that will give the same brightness but lesser runtime.
