Back in my CPF “Glory Days” I built what they called an R.O.P. Hotwire. It’s a modded Maglight that throws a crazy bright incan flood. It was fun back in the day, and might still be for someone. It still works but not with the included C sized batteries. I think one of them has an issue. The way I got it to work was by using TWO of those 18500 batteries and a makeshift adapter. I folded a sheet of paper the long way twice and wrapped it around the cells and it worked so batteries are the only issue here.
The ROP I believe stands for “Roar of the Pelican” since it uses a “Pelican” projector lamp? There is even a spare Pelican lamp in the tailcap storage space that Maglite is famous for.
Anyway, it cost me a bunch for the high temp glass, the metal op reflector, the lamp, the custom made adapter collar, the the C sized lion cells and of course the new C cell Maglite itself. I’m sure it can be brought back to life but that might require different batteries and perhaps an adapter because the C sized lion cells are now hard to find but this should be an easy fix, a lot easier than sourcing the parts and assembing this monster!
I’ll also throw in one 18500 cell and a brand new 21700 5kmah cell that I can’t use because the light I bought that for draws 9 amps and this battery can’t pump quite that much out so it only powers the light on 4 of the 5 settings before tripping the protection circuitry.
Asking price is $50 plus shipping. If this doesn’t fly off the shelf, after a week or two, I’ll be open to offers.
I know it’s soon but I’m giving this a bump because I thought it didn’t work but it DOES! You’ll need to figure out the battery situation but it does work and WOW is it bright!
Lovely light and awesome price. A steal for anyone who had been around when this was the latest and greatest and who wants to add this to the collection
The ROP is a great light set up.
Except for Pelican discountinuimg the 3854 bulb set.
I still have a few bulbs and it’s a still an impressive light especially in a 2C form factor.
I’m pretty sure this is from this light but there’s a chance it’s from a slightly larger D cell hotwire I made with an 1171 lamp. If you think you want it, I’ll try and get some fresh shots and maybe even a comparison to a current, powerful LED light.
Over in the “forum that shall not be named” I was just informed a 50mm extention tube is available that will allow this to take two 21700 cells so this old girl can live on! It’s from the same guy who made the one that’s on there now so I can say firsthand he does excellent work.
