How old are these things?
They use a micro USB port to charge.
Maybe there are 20% of them still being used.
And most of those people are never going to find out about this recall.
I’m guessing most people stopped using them a long time ago when they realized they were getting hot while recharging.
To get a replacement you have to take a picture of the unit with the serial number and you have to write “recall” in indelible marker ink on the unit. AND you have to provide proof that you disposed of the unit in accordance with all applicable federal and state laws.
They will not be sending out very many replacement models.
" We have identified that certain Anker PowerCore 10000 power banks (Model: A1263) manufactured between January 1st, 2016, and October 30th, 2019, which were sold between June 1st, 2016, and December 31st, 2022, only in the United States may pose a fire safety risk…" https://www.anker.com/a1263-recall
The language is very shady and misleading. The recall applies only to those sold in the US but they were sold in other countries.
I went to their site and they had one model recalled in 2023 and two other models recalled in 2024 and now this one in 2025.
I’m sure they are not the only ones/companys with potentially dangerous products out there. There are all kind of devices that use lithium ion batteries and if there are no provisions to shut down or limit heat there can and will be problems. It looks like the device in this recent recall used three cylindrical cells.
If you are in other countries and you go to ankers website you don’t see the same product recall page. It’s only because the US cpsc got involved that Anker is recalling them in the US.
There is no abundance of caution provided by anker in other countries. But they are not the only ones that do this. As more powerful devices age we will see more issues with fires.
And we will probably see more public service announcements about monitoring devices while charging and stopping the use of anything that gets “hot”.
I have one that I purchased in 2017. I wasn’t using it because I got rid of all of my micro USB cables a few years ago. It was just sitting in a drawer, so I submitted it for a replacement on Thursday, June 12.
In some smaller towns the household hazardous waste collection "day” is held once per year. And it’s not at a specific facility. It is set up in a parking lot. They will bring in trailers, various barrels and containers and a crew set up tarps on the ground and you are instructed to put the waste in your trunk and you are not allowed to get out of your car. You provide proof of residency while in line. You drive up with your trunk/back door open and the crew remove the waist and put it in various labeled containers.
It is free but like I said some towns only do it once per year and others twice a year. It is expensive for the town so sometimes two towns get together and pay for one site. In other areas around here multiple towns will contract with a private hazardous waste facility. There is a fee per pound of different waste materials for the residents of those towns but it is not real expensive. Again you are showing proof of residency to get that reduced rate. Of course larger population centers can’t operate that way.
