Hey Richard (or anyone else), what way is the Supfire M6 driver ring threaded? Which way do I turn to get it out? I’m having a terrible time of it.

Having the same problem

Normal (RH) threaded. They can be tight, but that’s how you want them or else they can loosen up over time and heat cycling.

Any suggestions on tools to get it out? None of my small-tipped pliers open that wide

Growing pains indeed…
I got a message from Simon this morning with a little more info on what’s going on at Convoy. I don’t have all the details yet but he told me there were “many difficulties”. I knew he had an issue with his manufacturer for the L2 reflector, but apparently there was more than that. That is why he shut everything down for an extended period. In all the chaos apparently some orders went out that should not have shipped. He kept the company closed much longer than originally planned to get things back on the right track. The timing couldn’t be worse with CNY happening right now. We’ll need to be patient until China is working again. Simon fully intends to address all the issues and make things right. I figured things would get tricky moving to the new factory. I was relieved to hear that he’s taking this all quite seriously. I assumed he would but with CNY we have not been in regular communication for the last several weeks. I look forward to 2016 beginning a new chapter for Convoy excellence. Some really cool new Convoy projects are planned for this next year but not until the dust settles and QC is back at the high level we’ve grown to expect from Convoy.

Hi Richard, (while you’re at it) or anyone else

Same question, except that mine is a S2 Host (not S2+) that I just got from you… This was to be my very first Mod/Build, and it has taken the wind out of my sails before I even get to crank-up my new Hobby King clone for the first time :frowning:

I’m an idiot, sure, but a 66yr old idiot that has been screwing around all my life (a “nuts and bolts” kind of guy), and just don’t want to destroy this brand new host. - Got a Qlite with Guppydrv, and a 219C waiting to go in it, along with a SMO reflector

Tried tapping gently (straight down into the holes) in each hole in attempt to straighten things out if it were cross-threaded, to no avail.

Please Help!

Thanks,

-Chuck

Sometimes I use two small screwdrivers to loosen things that are too wide for my pliers. Stick them in the holes of the ring, press the heads of the screw drivers against something such as a towel on a table that will allow them to turn, hold the flashlight head tight and use one hand to turn them both or put another screwdriver between them crossways to turn them. I hope you can make sense out of all of that.

I’ve found my Harbor Freight snap ring pliers work very well surprisingly, the one adapter is quit small and ran it on the belt sander a bit which brought it down to needle size, had these just sitting around and gave them a try and worked so going to inspect their better sets, with 20% off coupon of course, http://www.harborfreight.com/snap-ring-pliers-with-interchangeable-heads-60531.html

On the subject of Harbor Freight:

I use these $1.99 pliers for all of my lights; they’ve fit retaining rings on all of my lights. A couple were close, but they worked. I don’t have an M6 so I can’t tell if they would fit that exactly. Make sure you dig through the bin to find the set with the best tips; these are lovingly manufactured with Harbor Freight’s famous attention to consistency and quality.

Good ole Harbor Freight and the mandatory 20% off coupon, I must have 20-30 Cen-Tech DMM and their little flashlights by the box full, whats nice about those snap ring pliers mentioned they are spring tensioned outward not inward so it keeps outward tension and their beveled down and stays away from the threads, really surprised me because I to was using all those pliers and then saw the snap ring pliers brand new sitting there not even opened and thought no way, well yes way, worked so perfect I was dumb founded actually.

Counterclockwise I’m sure. Normal threading. Normal M6 and level II.

I’m with keltex78: use big, thin-tipped, needle-nose pliers. I don’t specifically remember what I used to get my M6 apart, but I can guarantee that it wasn’t snap-ring pliers. I’ve tried using snap-ring pliers on flashlights several times and had only poor results.

I use these, not attached to the handles. worked in every light I’ve had, even the ones with really really tiny holes. Better grab two sets, just in case one breaks.

Oops already mentioned*

I have both snap-ring pliers and needle-nose, but if they’re big enough to span the gap, the tips are too big to fit in the holes…. Sounds like I need to go get a cheap set and grind down the tips a bit.

Thanks guys

Edit: I got it out. Once I was confident I was turning the right way I pushed a little harder and it popped loose. Let the fun begin!

I need to use a different driver in this M6 but the stock one looks pretty nice, I feel bad stripping it down. If I just remove all of the wires from it and totally bypass it, will it rob a lot of power if I leave all the components intact?

No it doesn’t seem to rob a lot of power. I haven’t measured it, but I have never seen any appreciable battery drain either.

Is anyone here getting e-mail notification updates to subscribed threads? I haven’t been getting any since the site update.

none here….

None here either.

IIRC, the email notifications are still on the ToDo list, because they pretty much have to be custom rebuilt.

There's a line through that item on the To Do list.

I suppose sb should just remove the line for the time being.
