Ugh, I built a quad XP-L2. I was hoping that the multi-emitter setup would help blend the tints and make it bearable. Still pretty ugly IMHO. But Nichia? Not sure I’ve seen a Nichia that I didn’t like the tint of.
Probably when the XP-L stock gets depleted, but in every application except for triples I prefer the original XP-L over the XP-L2 (and would even prefer them there except they don't fit). The rough phosphor construction of the new generation Cree LEDs leaves a lot to be desired, which is why I'm glad that Nichia has stepped up to the plate with the 219C and 319AT.
For anything reflector based I would always recommend to use the original XP-L or XP-L HI instead of the XP-L2. Optically they just work better and have better tint edge-to-edge than the XP-L2.
In general I also prefer the original XPL mostly because of its much higher luminance and throw (when dedomed), but for this particular light I want to emphasize overall output with a wider beam. With quad emitters under the carclo TIR, the lower Vf of the XPL2 will be advantageous for my purpose.
Understood. I really need to do an in-light lumen comparison between the 319AT and the XP-L2...I do know that the 319AT puts out some serious lumens (like 4000 OTF in a triple---for a few seconds at least ;-) ).
I’d be interested in that measurement. Judging from Texas_ace’s tests, the 319AT would pull even more current, but they weren’t as bright as we hoped, very close to the D320 219C output at a given current.
I just put together the 319AT triple and it’s one floody light! It’s bright but due to the floody nature it doesn’t look as bright as the XP-L HI triple. With the H17F driver it’s pulling 9A from the tail.
edit…remeasured it at the tail with fresh VTC6. 12.3A
I may not have any more of these. I am waiting for all existing orders to go out before I post the last few, but there may be none left at all. I may or may not order another reel of these, but if I do there is no guarantee of a V2 bin. I got lucky last time.
