Hello …… greetings from Denmark (apologies for my possible future bad english)
I will start with my first attempt to modify a lamp into a UV lamp, which I can use for my amber-hunting.
And you have to start somewhere …… therefore I thought that I could try to modify one 26.5mm 3W 365nm UV LED Module LED Drop-in http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-26-5mm-3W-365nm-UV-LED-Module-LED-Drop-in-Orange-Peel-Reflector-with-Copper/1772600771.html
Which was a wrong purchase for my wf-501B. 365nm is not good to find amber with.
Therefore I thought, that I could just solder the LED bulb Off and then solder this LED bulb on if I choose the 16mm version:

Will it be able to function when it is at 8W ??
I have no experience at all, but would really like to get started, so if any of you have some good links to some basic rules / guides on how to modify flashlights and how to get started, you are more than welcome to post them here. I am most interested in modifying the UV flashlights … or do UV flashlights stronger/ more powerfull.
Kind regards
Michael Larsen, Denmark
Thanks wight.
Yes I saw the mod. by djozz Very interesting and cool
I Think I will have to practice a bit, before I will do a copy of the djozz mod. :GRADE:
You write that the 8W LED will function with a 3W driver.
Will it then send out with only 3W … so with reduced brightness …. or will it give the 8W full strength??? Sorry if this is a stupid question;) and I hope you understand what I mean
kind regards…
Michael L.
If it is a good driver the LED will get 3W. (Yes, it will have reduced brightness at 3W instead of 8W.) Limiting output is one of the primary purposes of the driver.
Yes. An 8W driver is probably needed for 8W operation.
IIRC some UV LEDs require a high Vf (Forward Voltage). For that reason you may not be able to get 8W using a Linear or DD type of driver. A buck driver with 2s may be required.
Hopefully someone with more UV LED knowledge will chime in.
That is a linear driver. As I have mentioned, the forward voltage of your LED may be too high. The light may “drop out of regulation” sooner than expected - this will make it less bright. It will certainly work but I do not know how well it will work.
I think that is a pretty interesting led you found: the first XM-size led that is not Cree that I have ever seen, and a 400nm led that is rated for 2800mA is very special too. I’m intrigued and ordered two for a test! The description says 3.4-3.8V, if that is correct a normal lineair driver should work. But all too often the numbers on aliexpress are pretty random. The output is given in lumen which has no meaning at 400nm. If the output is anywhere near what the 2800mA promises, you can make a fine powerful flashlight with it
hi djozz
It sounds really good.
I have seen your project: 9 LED 385nm uv flashlight. Very impressive. I just asked you a question in that thread, which I hope you will answer.
You may very well be the UV nerd, that I am looking for
Hope it’s OK if I ask you a question or two in the future
I am not in a hurry to make an uv flashlight …. but thought it would be cool to make my own UV flashlights……and are therefore very interested in how to modify flashlights
