Found my old Petzl Myo XP headlamp today. It was a great running and camping light back in the day but it’s outpt is quite anemic by modern standards. I found one guy online who upgrades his to a cree xpg only to find the optic projected the square die in a fugly beam.
Is there any better option out there these days to replace a lux iii other than the old ssc p4? Does anybody even sell p4’s?
Well, clearly not a lot of interest here but hey good news. Found an XML2 on a 20mm mcpcb in my parts box and opened up the old MyoXP. Easiest swap I’ve done by far. Nothing glued or stuck. Four torx screws in the back and it all comes apart. Wimpy stamped metal “heat sink” with a thermistor touching the back and the star touching the front. Healthy amount of heatsink paste between the star, sink and thermistor. Two solder connections and BAM back in service.
Turns out I must have had a newer MyoXP as it had the SSC P4 in there. XML2 offers a pretty good profile through the existing optic; maybe a little ringy. The star isn’t held in place very well as the old optic and holder kind of snapped around the SSC P4 so the xml2 floats a bit. Doesn’t seem to move once its assembled but it didn’t center perfectly… probably should open it back up and lightly glue/cement it in place. Maybe another day.
All in all I’d give this swap a solid 10:10 on the price:performance:ease scale.
