Mystery Moonlight Mode...any ideas about why?

today, a cheap flashlight of mine is in moonlight mode.
it has NO moonlight mode. On/Off is all it has ever done.
until now.
and it will not stop.
maybe you can figure it out.
please post your recommendations.

details:

  1. cheap (free, actually), Harbor Freight 3-AAA alkaline (remember Al Kaline?) LED.
  2. it works fine. cleaned contacts. put in new batteries. still the same. old batteries tested 80%.
  3. so…right now the LED is on. dim. only noticeable in darkness.

actually, i am OK with it being in constant moonlight mode.
i just cannot determine why it is in MM.

What kind of driver/switch/electronics? Could be a broken wire, a leaking FET, damaged LED, broken switch, anything. But most likely:

What happens when you bypass the switch?

I don’t know about the flashlight, but I do remember Al Kaline. Pretty good ballplayer.
