Need help finding my ideal EDC light

So I’ve had a few lights, some of them decent, some of them not quite so decent. Here’s what I’m looking for in my wild quest for a new EDC light.

- 18650/18350 batteries (already somewhat invested in those, they also seem like the superior choice for EDC lights).

- Compact, looking for something that’s in the range of 3 to 4.5” for overall length. Probably better to have it 3.5 to 4.5” though, just for being able to grip it and use a tail switch with my thumb.

- Momentary on/off option, so I can use the light at night for shooting with a pistol.

- Tail switch of some kind, maybe even a tail switch/body switch combo or something else where I can select modes easier and don’t have to cycle the tail switch to find my bright mode.

- Neutral white LED, but if I find a light that fit’s all of the above, I’m fine with something reasonably close to neutral white.

- Obviously, a good clip that carries reasonably low.

  • Oh - right, $price$, I’m really trying to find a light under $50, willing to push that up a little, but not too far. If I somehow lose a light, or if it gets stolen/broken, I would like to not ate hate myself for a month straight.

Also considering the idea of picking up multiples if I find an ideal light, just to have on hand if companies decide to discontinue them. That’s happened with a few items I really liked using for EDC or work. Really drives me crazy to not be able to buy a replacement later on. Especially after spending a significant amount of time researching. So yeah - not trying to spend an excessive amount of money on a light. Usually if I buy something to EDC it will get used, it’s not going to sit in a drawer (Ok - I’m a little guilty of having too many knives, gotta sell a few I haven’t really carried enough pretty soon).

Here’s a shortlist of relevant lights that I have and enjoy that sort of inspired me to go on this wild goose chase.

- Streamlight 1L-AA, this is currently my most carried light.
Like: Almost the ideal size for what I’m looking for. Ridiculously tough. (I lost it out of a shitty belt holster - now replaced - and it spent a week out in a hay field, survived 2 rainstorms, got ran over by the hay swather, and once I finally found it, it still worked! Although it has a few battle scars on it now). I also love the clips that Streamlight has on their lights, it’s super handy to be able to hook them face up or face down or even stick it on the bill of a hat to be hands free for a few minutes.
Don’t Like: It’s right at the bottom end of being bright enough, CR123s help, but still not quite there. No real rechargeable battery options. No moonlight mode.

- Thrunite T1
Like: Became a big fan of 18350 batteries after I got this thing, so capable in such a small package! It’s got a z-clip like the Streamlight (not sure what to call them). I’m now a big fan of the warmer neutral white option I selected for this light, looks so much nicer in my opinion over cool LED’s. The adjustable brightness level is awesome. Being able to go immediately into moonlight, or to max brightness, is also great. The tail stand feature is cool, but not something I desperately need.
Don’t like: It’s almost too small for a fist grip. Not a fan of the side button - really wish this thing had a tail switch that I could activate with my thumb, would also fix the length issue. Probably doesn’t throw far enough to really be good for a tac-light if I need to use a pistol in the dark, but I’m being a bit nitpicky here.

- Streamlight 2LX - got this as a weapon light, found out it’s not a 1” outer diameter, bought a Streamlight PolytacX to use instead, now it’s just sitting in my lights drawer and doesn’t get used much.
Like: 18650 batteries, and of course the clip.
Dislike: It’s pretty damn huge, not exactly ideal for pocket carry. It’s barely brighter than the 1L-AA, and far dimmer than the Streamlight Protac 90X I got, (which is somehow much smaller) even though it uses the same batteries.

Here’s a list of lights I’ve looked into while attempting to find my ideal light, but don’t quite fit the bill. I’m only including the ones that came the closest to what I’m looking for.

- Klarus E1 - I have one of their other lights for a weapon light, love the 2 switch system
Like: Overall length is awesome. 2 switch system would work great for what I want.
Dislike: Proprietary batteries (really Klarus?) It looks like the brightness levels are weirdly spaced. This would really be a no-brainer if it didn’t have those two issues.

- Klarus XT1C - mainly considered this because it has most of the features that the E1 has
Like: No proprietary battery issue.
Dislike: Found out it’s not running 18350’s like I thought - so back to the drawing board.

- EagleTac DX3B Clicky Pro
Like: Checks almost all the boxes on features I want
Dislike: Price

- JETBeam Raptor JETRRT01R
Same shit as the above light, checks almost all the boxes of features, but it’s a bit too high in price.

- Fenix PD25
Like: Fit’s most of my needs feature-wise
Dislike: Battery type, same issue as the small Klarus

- EagleTac D25LC2 Tactical
Like: Light adjustment/selection options, main tail cap button w/ mode selection on body, battery can be almost any 18650.
Dislike: Slightly out of my price range. Slightly longer than I want. And for some reason, it doesn’t look like they offer the Nicha in this model, even though the non-tactical version does. Weird.
^ This might be the light I end up going with if someone can’t come up with a better suggestion. It’s really close to being ideal, probably worth it just to spend a few extra bucks on it. Also, it’s a damn good looking light, which is kind of a bonus I guess.

If anyone has any suggestions on lights that I haven’t found out about that fit the bill, please let me know. In other words…… please help. Even if it’s just to say, “get this one dumbass - it’s clearly the right choice”.

You need to spend about an hour looking at all the options of the Convoy S2+ at the convoy store on AliExpress. You may want the optional 2 screw clip.

Do they have a different method of selecting lighting modes other than the tailcap?

Sofirn SP 31 V2. Dual switch with momentary on. The 18350 short tube fits.
edit- meant to say SP not SC

It hasn’t been an hour. Tail switch only, short tube for 18350. Different drivers and UI options and MANY different LED options. Different listings have different UI options. Spend an hour and you’ll still have questions. Everybody needs at least one S2+.

OOOoooo (the SP13), this looks promising!

You’re referring to the short tube for a convoy s2 right?

Still looking through Convoy options. It’s rather extensive, and it’s great that there are lots of options. But unless some of those options are actually rebuilding the entire light and adding new hardware then it’s not meeting the criteria of what I need for a light. One of the features I like and would prefer to have is not present on the construction of the convoy, so unfortunately it’s not something I can consider for this purpose. I do intend to get one sometime as a work light, but not as a primary EDC light with some somewhat tactical oriented features.

The taste of quality lingers long after the price is forgotten

“get this one dumbass – it’s clearly the right choice”

- JETBeam Raptor JETRRT01R
checks almost all the boxes

Haha - I was wondering if someone would actually quote me on that.

I might not get one of those now - but it’s definitely something I will think about getting later on. They’re such a slick little light. I really don’t understand why more manufacturers don’t make lights with rotating switches on the body, it’s just a super slick way of manipulating the light.

Ok - so sorry for spamming you with replies. But I just wanted to tell say that you sent me down a real rabbit hole. Searching for 18350 bodies, then I found out that you can get a warmer version of the light if you buy direct from their store, and then I found out that you can actually put a two-way clip on them from EagleTac.

This is ridiculous, but it actually looks like I could do all of that and still come in with a light that does everything I want for under $50. I really didn’t think it was possible.

Thanks big time. When I get all of it in, I will have to make a post in here. I don’t know anything about reviewing lights, but I can at least show it off once I get it.

Kinda still want to get an EagleTac as well . . . . . oh !@#$. I think I’m becoming an addict.

Happens. Enjoy^. The short tube I referred to is sold by Sofirn BTW.

Having been in the flashlight collecting hobby for over 20 years, and having bought several hundred light’s, I have come to the conclusion there is no perfect EDC. Every light is a compromise. Same with knives, multi tools, and guns. If I had to name a model that possibly comes close, it would be the S2+. Best size, weight, power, throw and flood combination, emitter options, body colors options, modability, bullet proof tail switch, no parasitic drain crap, no anduril nonsense, and all for $10 to $15.

Sofirn SC31T @5000K has a built-in charger and is a bit more powerful than the SP31V2.0

“A matter of taste”, says the ape and bites the soap.

In my experience, the perfect EDC is the next one that I lust for.

1 Thank

Well. I got a Sofirn 5000k edition with a 18350 short tube on the way. Also ordered a diffuser they offered for it on their site because it was like $1.50, I mean, why not at that price right?

Probably going to pick up a EagTac 2 way clip and a rubber tail cap thing that is supposed to allow you to tail stand it.

Also - while I was looking around, I found yet another EagTac, (is it EagTac or EagleTac? Because I’ve found multiple stores that label the light as EagleTac, yet some others say EagTac. Or does it even matter?) Anyway, it’s an 18650 light that has a lot of the features that would fit what I’m looking for, although still a tiny bit long. But damn do they make such good-looking lights, the art nerd in me is absolutely in love with the styling of them.
You guys are right. I bet I’m never going to find something that fits exactly what I want, and will probably end up with half a dozen lights that are all very similar by the time I convince myself I’ve found “the one”. Just light my knife collection that keeps growing because I keep finding something else I want.

I don’t have a Convoy, and now I feel bereft, confused by choices…:frowning:

My most used EDCs are an Olight S1R Baton 2 because I can literally toss it on the side and the magnet charger leaps and clicks on it, a Lumintop Tool on the keys…

…and the famous Lumintop FW3 (v1, one in Alu and one in copper, both with shorty 18350 tubes). The FWs really

are the finest of lights. My copper on the short tube.

If google doesn’t help, just look at the engraving on the lights themselves. There’s no such thing as “EagleTac” but that’s what most people call it anyway, just because. They make good lights, if a little bit vanilla and slower to advance with what’s available to use…great communication and service if you ever need it. They had a couple years ago that I loved but then discontinued them, and today those models are far surpassed by a number of other brands anyway.

Ahem…There very much is, or was, a thing called EagleTac. They started out using Eagletac, I have several of them, the EDC lights like the D25A and D25C are still going strong. Even got a Ti D25A with one of the first Nichia 219c LEDs in it.

They started as EagleTac and made a pretty cool 2x18650 thrower (M3C4) with one of the first rotary ring switches. They also produced upgraded heads for these light utilising the up and coming new LEDs, I still use mine to this day for dog walking at night.

My first was purchased around 2011 I think…said Eagtac on it and the other. Was it a market thing, like Eagle in the UK? Curious now about the history. I’ve always read that EagTac was correct, back in the CPL days. They started out in Canada, right?

Well…I stand corrected. I think that’s twice today. lol.

Their LLC says EagTac started in 2009, Washington state. The USA website hints that maybe EagleTac branding is/was in Europe…? I see these old pics from the TLF forum and an ancient amazon listing.

My D25a Ti says EagTac on it, it has a pathetic Low CRI XM-L2, and I failed to get it open to change it… sad

.

D25a is one of the most slender AA lights on the market,… the Titanium version is now called D3a and offers High CRI SST-20 LED…
