New build. Starfish Z3 w/ LHD7016 4500k

The Starfish Z3 is a neat little host.
It takes a 25mm driver and uses a 25mm proprietary MCPCB.
They usually come with the mcpcb, but this one did not. Luckily I had an extra on hand.

This is the first time I tried the LHD7016 4500k emitter.
It is similar to the 7070 Daydream.
Nice even grid pattern.
The notch delineates the Anode +

Building the 25mm Fet+1 @INeedMoreLumens driver and eSwitch. I used 16ga wire for the emitter leads. It barely fit

I didn’t get any pictures of the tail end, but if you plan on pulling high amps, you need to figure out a bypass. I melted the spring on my first X3. These drivers can pull 50+ amps with the right setup.

I like this emitter. Is it a Daydream killer? I don’t think so. I’ll have to compare them side by side soon.

I’m really pushing this little host to it’s limits. It gets hot fast.
I’ll get some pics soon to show it’s size.

S21E and Starfish Z3 side by side.

The spring on mine collapsed too :person_facepalming:.

I’ll get pictures soon of the bypass on this one.
What I did was used a section of 18ga wire, stripped about 15mm off, ran it through the inside of the spring and to the outside at the bottom, between the last coil.
Crossed it across the bottom and soldered it in place on both sides. Then did the standard bypass solder blob at the top.
That way when the spring retaining ring is tightened, it smashes the wire bypass against the bottom of the tail cap.

I was just gonna do a double spring. But since I don’t have any on hand and I don’t want to keep scavenging them from functional switches I’ll resort to the same technique.

I had the light tailstanding on turbo and it went dark. Picked it up and felt the battery rattling inside

Your drivers are too powerful! LOL!

i’ve seen these. they look interesting. have you had time to compare them to the 7070 daydream?

1 Thank

Yeah. They are good, but I think the Daydream wins.

1 Thank

it’s funny, the lhd7016 looks more pink than the daydream in your photo. is billy still the go-to guy for daydream leds?

1 Thank

Yeah, it does.
I need to take updated photos. The photos were taken 4-6 weeks apart. LHD7016 more recent, so things look a little less green here now.

Billy IS still the guy. I believe they are out of stock, but in production.
