FYI, I didn't realize I could put Nichia 219's on a Cree star. I'm probably the last one to know, but just in case someone else doesn't know, here's a photo.
I've been using the Nichias on those 10mm stars, but I wanted to use them in a P60 drop-in and I got a couple 16mm XP-G stars. They work fine.
Here. The reason is a P60 drop in will hold a 16mm star perfectly so that the LED is centered. The same cannot be done with a 10mm star. However, it would still work but chances are you LED would not be centered.
How does the color of these LED’s in real world usage compare with say a neutral 3C xml? Moving from cool white to neutral I saw a hugee difference that made me never want to go back to cool whites again. Is the difference between the cree neutrals and this LED as great? I’ve been wanting to try these for a while.
Cree XP-G R4 (4200K 75CRI, tint of this LED is almost identical to the 219):
Cree XM-L U2 (?K 65CRI):
Cree XM-L T5 (5000K 75CRI 3C?):
Cree XM-L T5 5A (4200K (supposedly) 75CRI):
Midday Sunlight (~5777K 100CRI):
Sorry about the blurriness in some of the pictures, I was trying my best to keep the camera steady without having to go get my tripod out of the closet. I hope you can see why everyone is nutty over the 219. White balance on my camera was set to “sunlight” (not sure what Nikon classifies as sunlight, but you get the idea). The bottle is a gold/brown color that many LEDs wash out to a green or yellow color. The top is beige brown and the only LED, IMHO, that makes it look correct is the 219.
Wow thanks so much for the pics!! They really told me what I needed to know. The 3C actually looks pretty good compared with others, though there’s just something about the Nichia that looks so much more natural if you do a direct A/B comparison. It looks like I have to start saving for another mod…
Perhaph I haven't been watching the threads, LOL. Too busy in the shop, but others usually have the answers, so I don't worry too much. Nice to be looked after.
KLowD9xThanks for those photos!! Absolutley what we needed. You should make a thread on those. Gives no doubt as to why high CRI beats any low CRI "tint".
If I make a thread on this, I will be sure to set up a tripod and be a little more similar in my pictures and less blurry. If there are more requests for this, I will get out the tripod and the white towel and make it happen. I’m glad you all found the pictures helpful. The surprising thing to me is even though the 129 and XP-G R4 neutral are almost identical in tint, they render colors in a completely different way. Which is very obvious in the pictures.
