I used to use a drip coffee maker, but realized it consumed too much space for delivering so little. A friend of mine turned me onto French press. I won’t go back to drip. I prefer Bodum because of the glass beaker being easy to clean instead of stainless steel with a crevice along the bottom. But, I’ve broken one in the past.
If you have a nice thermos carafe, you can pour your French pressed coffee into that while using a paper filter, so you can avoid the silt. Have you tried ground up dried eggshells in your coffee mix? It’s excellent for helping to tap down on acidity/bitterness.
Yeh, blades cut unevenly. You can get fine powder mixed with “flakes” and small pieces, and possibly big chunks of beans. Continuous, pulsed, no difference.
That’s why I just say screw it and grind the everloving shiite out of ’em.
“Portable” as in a doodad I can move around, plug in and use when I need it, and then put back on a shelf, vs one of those “appliances” the size of a toaster (or bigger!) that you pretty much leave on the counter 24/7.
Vipon special, like 14bux.
Yeah, considered a burr grinder, but they were pricey.
I like coffee. I prefer something better’n store-bought coffee-scented sawdust. But I’m not A Coffee Guy, like one of those who only uses coffee that was eaten then crapped out by rabid monkeys in the Himalayas or anything. I’m mostly okay with what I’m doing now, don’t need “professional” or “connoisseur” equipment or anything.
If I could get a burr grinder fairly cheap… yeah, I might. As long as it ain’t a toaster.
But aha, I just remembered, I do have a manual grinder. Had a blackout a coupla Christmasses ago, had beans, had hot water (ie, gas), but no electricity to grind the f’ers. NOW, I got a rechargeable (nominally) garlic-chopper that works on garlic, peppers, onions, etc., and could work just as easily on coffee beans, but not back then. So, probably another vipon special, I got a manual coffee grinder as well.
Y’know, I might just try that today, see if it grinds evenly and maybe not as fine.
I had a Mr Coffee that started oozing “black paint” from the bottom. Nfi what that is/was, would make an unholy mess, stained anything it touched, and I was thinking, like, wtf?, how would I know I’m not eating any of that? So tossed that but saved the basket, thinking I could post-filter my silty coffee. Yeah, right. The fines clogged up the filter and left a puddle in the basket that wouldn’t drain through. Poking the nipple from underneath to jiggle the filter, etc., would get drops at a time. Not worth the effort.
So, I let it settle as much as possible and try to not drink the silt.
Got a Macy*s special for a steal. “La Something”, like “La Coffee”. Glass bucket, easy to see and clean.
Tried similar (pot vs carafe). Still clogs because of the fines.
No to the eggshells. Trying to cut down on my botulinum intake…
That coffee silt is good for you. It’s like the “mother” in cider vinegar. Puts hair on your chest and protects you from seagulls, among other things. Avoiding the silt is a sin.
I put that milk frother to good use, though. Cooked my coffee, put half’n’half in the “pitcher”, added sugar and vanilla extract, frothed away ’til it got nice and fizzy.
Had the coffee in the bottom of the mug, fizzy vanilla-whipped-cream on top, looked like one of those fancy fru-fru coffee drinks people pay obscene bux in some places, and was sooooooooooo good.
Bought a set of Jabra Elite 75t earbuds. I had lost my neckband earbuds, JBL Reflect Mini 2’s, and was looking for a good neckband replacement… but couldn’t find anything decent. It seems that form factor is becoming less common. Wireless independent earbuds is all the rage. I didn’t want to go that route, because of fearing loss (a neckband keeps them together). A number of times seeing a lone Apple Airpod lying in the street, crushed… imagining some cyclist accidentally dropped one then the car behind crushes it, just bugs me. The 75t fit like a glove. Not worried about them popping out.
I’ve been using corded and “dumb” wireless earbuds, so this was the first time I used a set of earbuds that you can configure and manage with an app on your phone. Using a hearing test, the Jabra was tuned to my specific ear sensitivity. The sound quality is so superb. List price is $199.95. I got these for $54 shipped, refurbished from Jabra. (LINK).
You’re welcome. The gold ones disappeared, but then I saw black/titanium ones turn up yesterday. They’re still up there. They don’t come in a box, so not a nice gift presentation. It’s a ziplock bag with instruction sheet, earbud tip blister pack, the charger case, earbuds, and mini USB-C cord. But everything looks new. I didn’t see any signs of use on mine.
Angled Baseus USB-C cable with innovative USB-A double-sided connector that frees you from having to worry about orientation on both ends. LINK
I got this for $2 in 0.5 m length two weeks ago, but price has gone up. Still worth it IMHO. Baseus overengineered the connectors so they can freely bend without any wire fraying. Wish I’d bought more when they were cheaper!
Got a ridiculously good price on this over the July 4th holiday. What was supposed to be a 2-week backorder wait turned into 11 weeks but it finally showed up yesterday. This thing is a hoss! Wish it were a little bit smaller - huge change in feel and approach compared to air bradders but other than that I find zero to complain about with this tool. Should be good for holding down emitters……
