They finally got it to work. The problem was finding the right wavelength of light to probe the nucleus of Thorium 229. It was difficult to make a laser that worked 148 NM which is ultraviolet. The Thorium is embedded in calcium fluoride crystals. I played with calcium fluoride crystals growing up and the family volunteers at the fluorine museum in Harden County Illinois. Atomic clocks are almost small enough to be used in a watch. The new clock should stimulate laser development in the UV range. World's first working nuclear clocks built after decades of effort

Odd. The page loads for a fraction of a second, I can see the headline and picture of the round thingy with numbers all around it… then I get a “this page failed to reload, press here to reload..”. Rinse, repeat.
