How do you tell what material is the o-ring of a light?
Do certain brands use certain materials for o-rings? or will they use a variety of materials for different lights?
which material is the most common material for o-rings for most brands?
These are generalizations - Color doesn’t mean anything in absolute terms…
But they hold true most of the time
Black = Buna-N
Red/Orange = silicone
Some Random Bright Color = crappy silicone
Dark Brown (almost black) = Viton
PPtk
Unless the flashlight market is some kind of exception you can usually assume epdm unless otherwise stated. There isn’t any need for chem resistant or impermeable ones like viton, butyl etc and though si is not uncommon it doesn’t hold up to shear stress as well (more suited to gasket or sleeve seal type interfaces) and it’s not impermeable if you need seals for pressurized gas.
Thanks for the replies.
I had read about using the correct lubes for the correct materials, but I realized I was not sure how to tell each material apart.
Mainly been using silicon grease. Most of the lights I have are black o-rings.
So a simple guide is not to use silicon on nonback or bright colored o-rings, I guess.
