They are of the wider variety - thinner would be better, but hard to say. Look like they are tap welded which is fine. Looks unfinished because no wrapper covering it up. My guess is they will fit. Check it carefully though - try one, make sure it goes in all the way to make contact to the brass button.
Looks like the tops are a bit messy spotwelded, but as long as the tops are centered and the welds are fixed well they should do the job. It does not get any elegance awards though, and I would be bothered if I received batteries like that.
I’ve just studied Matts video, and the middle plate in the battery carrier looks like it has quite wide indentations, so fingers crossed.
Worst case - can I buy some smaller buttons and solder them on myself?
Well, breaking the spotwelds might be tricky - not sure I'd even do it, and I've done a lot with batteries. I've grinded down spotwelds when salvgaging batts from packs, but they use thin conductive strips that are easy to simply pull off. Adding over the top is probably making the cell too long.
Best thing is to remove the barrier PCB's from the carriers - I've done a few and pretty easy with a soldering iron, low risk mod. Think it's been published here on BLF, probably couple/several times.
I’m a bit disappointed that NKON who people rate highly have shipped such dodgy looking batteries. I’m a bit stressed TBH, I’ve spent a lot of money on this amazing light that I don’t need! Stories of handles damaging the light in transit and what seems to be a very fussy battery carrier are not helping!
Hhmmm - I think worse and that's been common is no spotwelding at all, just a shrink wrap holding it down. The spotwelding is better, maybe the best way, just looks ugly exposed. Not sure if there's any other method to attach the button top - maybe someone else knows.
Pretty much all battery packs in tools are spotwelded. I recently took apart new Worx packs (used in other brands), all cells are spotwelded.
You can send Neal a message and he should do it for you. Worst case you have 180 days of paypal protection, so not like there is any risk of loosing your money at this point.
Although keep in mind that there has been a holiday in China up until yesterday IIRC.
Well, you spent the money now so worries are not going to change anything. After you received the light and after a while you will know how it is and how it works and then you will know what was there to worry.
Me, I have had the GT4 for a while now, and although most of the time it has been with my collegue who refuses to give it back, it is a huge fun light, and likely useful at some point. If it is 360 dollar (light plus batteries plus new leds) nice I’m not sure but that is what we are flashlight nuts for :innocent:
Hello TA, i know that but for the past 25 days, no reply from neals side messages emails nothing, he was on instagram but no reply to my messages, just that he saw them amd no reply…not a good stuff in my book, I understamd everybody everywhere but…when we can’t keep it up, then I will let it go, maybe he will.ship it and reply to me bis 31 oct is his deadline if not that’s that. I’m sorry cuz i really want this light, maybe I will find ot somewhere else. Pay full price and that’s that. I’m sorry that I have to do this. Loved this project gt4
I understand, I also have only got 1 message from him in the last month. I know that lumintop is having a real hard time getting supply so they can build the lights. Same reason I am still waiting for GT90 conversion kits after almost 6 months.
If you have to cancel, that is really understandable. Only thing I would suggest for canceling is to do everything you can to let Neal refund you directly vs going with a paypal dispute as paypal disputes are really bad for the seller and Neal will refund you as long as it has not shipped.
If you title your message to him something about paypal dispute I am betting a refund will get processed pretty quick. I know he has a real hard time keeping up with all his messages.
So refound received, srry TA that I didn’t get the light after I wrote the email with refound in it , imediatly i got a reply, not ideal but yeah, no more blf for me from neals side , that’s that.
Is neal still shipping? I saw some slight issue for Hmmm Hmmm Hmm but there was also a comment saying after October 8th they would start shipping again.
Hello there, my issue was that the light was resent to him idk why maybe batteerys inside theu found it and that was that. But after 25 working days …. i said no more and got my money back via refound . Like TA told me, no issue there. GL u are in the USA amd no stress by.your end there
I feel like an expectant father - my GT4 arrives in the next 3 hours.
[edit]
It’s arrived!
The good - it works! I followed Matt’s instructions on loading the battery carrier, i.e. cleaned the contacts with alcohol, and really ensured the carrier was tight. The light is in perfect condition, which is a bit surprising because…
The bad - the packaging was not good at all, very much like Matt’s first GT4 sample. Mine came in the carry case I ordered alongside had the handle disassembled wrapped in newspaper in a plastic bag, and the handle bolts / O-ring in another little bag. This was just in a cardboard box with some foam from another light for padding - see image.
I feel very lucky that my light arrived intact, God knows how it was handled all the way from China to the UK. This is expensive stuff, and whilst Covid obviously makes things difficult for all of us, this is just some packaging! All my other (small) Lumintop lights have arrived fine in nice boxes. After seeing Matt’s GT94 video I expected it in the full retail box, my heart sank when the courier gave me a small-ish but heavy cardboard box!
That aside, I’m happy to report that my NKON button top VTC6’s fix very well, and the light is just incredible. My last big light is a Thrunite TN40, which has always impressed me as it’s a throwy light with good flood. It now pales compared to the massive output of the GT4 as one might expect! The GT4 throws a bit further too!
Waiting for darkness now - will post some beamshots when I get the chance and a suitable location.
