Olight Baton Ultra...anybody check it out yet?

I searched and see there’s been a few reviews done on this light here on BLF, but no discussions following the review. I know Olight isn’t most around here’s cup of tea, but I’m curious about the new LED they are using on this light (EIP1) Any feedback is appreciated!

It’s pretty good imo. Mine has a duv of 0.0002 on turbo, pretty dead neutral. On low it’s at 0.0098, so a touch green. That said the runtime is really good, I picked it up on launch and i’ve been using it around the house for some DIY, locating a leak yesterday from the bathroom and I’ve only had to charge it once so far. Readings are from an opple so take it with a grain of salt.

It does seem that the orentation of the USB-C port is a bit of a lottery which is a shame. If you get lucky and have it to the side or the front, you can fit a WM3 clip and clip mount and carry it the (in my opinion) the correct way round, with the bezel down and the tailswitch up. I am not lucky and mine is directly in line with the factory clip which is annoying.

I did catch the pocket clip with some furniture during a house move and bent it out, but a quick pinch with a pair of pliers has bent it back to normal.

I’ve previously carried a warrior mini 3, and while the 2 stage, pressure sensitive tailswitch is nice, the click/double click modes on the b4u are just different rather than better/worse. I find that holding momentary medium on the wm3 required conciously holding a certain pressure, whereas on the new baton its just hold the button, or double click and hold it for momentary turbo.

It does throw a little farther than the WM3, and feels a touch brighter. I’m comparing to the warrior mini 3 as it’s closer to that than the baton 3 pro. The B3P is floody and green, whereas the warrior mini 3 had more throw and was a better tint.

I understand the hate that they get for the emitter choice and proprietary batteries/charging situation, but in all honesty the neutral tint and USB-C of recent releases is the right direction imo.

I’m going to agree with the above, I’m very happy with mine. Carrying it bezel-up is not what I’m used to, but it does mean that pulling the light out of my pocket I’m already holding it where the switch is. On mine the USB port is to the side, so I could probably use the WM adaptor and clip for bezel-down carry but at the moment I’m just using it as-is.

I have no way of measuring the DUV but mine is not noticeably green even on low, at levels above that it just looks nice and neutral. Without measuring equipment I can’t say that it’s not green, but what I can say is that if I don’t notice the green it’s not bothering me. Moonlight is properly low too, again I can’t measure it, but for me moonlight means sub-lumen and this seems to be in that ball-park. That’s one grump I have with the Arkpro, moonlight’s too bright.

I have also come from a WM3 and prefer the Baton Ultra, the battery indicators are fantastic and I love that it has a hidden USB-C port. I have nothing against the magnetic charger, but being able to charge it with the same cable that my phone uses does simplify things. I also like that the Baton has a lens over the optic.

I would prefer a standard battery, but I think my WM3’s getting retired so I have the battery from that as a spare. One thing I will say in favour of the battery is that it fits very neatly into the tube and there’s no room for it to rattle. Also Olight have been making that same battery for years so future availability should not be a concern.

Thank you guys!! I appreciate the detailed replies. Overall, I do like Olight products but already having enough of the green tint from some of them and Fenix lights, I was really hoping and happy to hear your thoughts on the lack of green! I’ve been itching for another new light (not that I need one) and this one has peaked my interest a bit. Very encouraging replies.

I reviewed it on 1Lumen

I like some of the old Olight 16340 Batons I got a long time ago… but their newer stuff isn’t really my cup of tea. Proprietary battery, cool white only, green tint, low CRI, really aggressive texture, 2-way clip, tail magnet… meh. The bezel-up carry style is nice though, since it puts your finger right on the button without having to flip the light around. And for normal use, the UI works pretty well… mostly just 1 click to turn it on or off at the most recent level.

I’ve never had any Olights (apart from the imini) for all the usual reasons (protected batteries, MCC, expensive, green) but picked up a Warrior Ultra in the recent sale. That got me looking a bit more at their lights.

The Baton Ultra (and the Pro 4) really do have phenomenal runtimes! The Ultra and Pro 4 put out ~500+ lumens for 3+ hours. I think Skilhunt does a pretty good job overall, but the comparable level on the M200 only runs for 2 hours. Both with nominally 3500 mah batteries. That can’t all be driver efficiency but I’m guessing it’s a combo of more efficient emitter, more efficient driver, better performing battery. There are plenty of 21700 class flashlights that can’t beat that runtime!

Doesn’t override the issues that Olight gets criticized for, but I give them credit for putting out high performance lights.

I reviewed it.

Where can we find your review?

Can anyone confirm if this thing memorises moonlight mode? 1lumen suggests no, but grizzly review suggests yes … really hoping not, such a stupid flaw in olight lights …

Yes it does.

2 Thanks

Damnit …

I don’t know about this one, but I checked some older ones…

  • Olight S1 Baton: No, did not memorize moon.
  • Olight S-Mini Baton: Yes.
  • Olight S2R Baton II: Yes.

So… it looks like old models worked, but then they broke it. Newer models have the undesirable behavior. Gotta go 10+ years ago to get rid of moon memory.

Older models also sometimes had neutral CCTs and decent tints, instead of the cool white green-blue tint all the recent models use.

As far as I can tell, the S-Mini Ti (2016/2017) was probably the best model they ever made. Things went downhill after that. It did have the moon memory, unfortunately, but otherwise was the best physical design and best tint I’ve had from an Olight.

Thanks. I agree, however I just got my baton ultra (first olight I’ve bought in years) and I really like it – mostly I like the tailcap with a moderate (600 lumens) one-click, olight turbo lumen levels are usually so excessive, but to have that option on a double click is perfect for me.

Other than LED choices, if they didn’t memorise moon and removed high from the normal rotation (since you can get high on the tailcap), this UI would be basically perfect. If they removed moonlight and high from the side switch rotation, that would then only cycle between low (15) and medium (120) like zebralight sub-levels which would be really really nice …

They have a neutral white ArkPro. It’s 5200k and has great tint (-0.002 to 0.002). Hopefully they eventually release a neutral white version of their “proprietary” emitter.

Little update, I have to say I don’t COMPLETELY hate the memorized moon: I would still choose not to have it, however at night with little children I have to use moon a lot, checking baby etc - I don’t use any other level over night, and when you hold to moon it’s quite a long delay so I appreciate instant click on moon … alternatively, olight could also reduce the delay with the hold to moon I suppose, it is a bit excessively long …
