Olight R20 Javelot review (900 lm,XP-L HI,18650)

Greetings,

This review will be dedicated to a renewed Olight model, the R20 Javelot.

So, what’s new this time?

As we can see, there are quite a lot of differences

1. The new model has a much higher lumen count (900 vs 600)
2. The new model has much more throw ( i guess that dedomed XP-L HI is there for a good reason)
3. The new model has 3 brightness modes, vs 2 modes that the older model has
*+
Shall we start?+*

As other “civilian” Olight flashlights, the R20 comes in a half-transparent little plastic box

The aren’t much bundles accessories, but all the necessary stuff is included. The battery is installed in the flashlight.

Usb cable, lanyard

A very short and simple user manual

Here is the flashlight. It has one of the simplest and cleanest looks that I have ever seen in a modern flashlight.

One interesting thing I noticed, there is a hardly seen (and felt) circular pattern on a smooth parts of the flashlight.

Here is that smooth reflector and the polished bezel. No quality issues here….

Here is one of the flashlight’s main advantages. After unscrewing a special door we can access a micro-USB charging port. The indicator lights red when the battery is being charged, and the color changes to green when the charging process is finished.

The flashlight stands steadily in a candle mode. There is a special hole for attaching the lanyard. The button is large, and is rather soft than hard.

That is a reverse click button, meaning that you can change modes after turning the flashlight on. There is a mode memory. The modes are being changes in order max~~mid-min~~>max->… No strobe mode.

A proprietary rechargeable 18650 is being used. The flashlight wirks without problem from regular 18650 batteries as well, but won’t charge them.

The threads are square, lubricated and anodized.

This is how the flashlight looks like in my rather small palm.

The flashlight has a clear white light, I could not notice any tint.
Please notice the artifacts at the edges of the side-spill. It can’t be noticed in real life. The bezel shape is responsible for them.

Back to life, back to reality

I really like the light, the hotspot shape and overall lite distribution. A real compact darkness-scorcher.

Some numbers

Wow… A real thrower, I did not expect the light to deliver such strong performance.

Conclusions

I really liked the flashlight, it actually greatly exceeded my expectations. Not your average light, and with that charging function on board, it could be a great option to a lot of people.

I’d like to thank Olight for providing the flashlight for the review

Questions? Requests? I would be happy to assist.

Thanks for the review. Not sure I like the design, it reminds me of an old budget light seraph? Not sure, but a great review.

Marc

Really good review thanks for posting

I recently bought a R40 Seeker. That on board charging is a real game changer. I bet we see a lot more of these in the future.

I like flashlights with simple designs and UI. I really liked the Surefire G2X model, it’s simple design, and i’m rooting for the R20 as it has some resemblance of the G2X, i like the design of this light, also the outputs, but my only gripe is the High being the first. They could have at least out the Med first or the low instead of the high mode. I don’t wanna blast my night adapted vision with a 900 lumen light while in bed.

Does this have a memory though?

I can see none of these pictures you posted. Were the links corrupted?

What was even more impressed is how tough the Olight M series can be.
