I think yes, both old and new have a parasitic drain that will kill a battery in about 1 1/2 years. (about 50uA)
That can be eliminated by locking the light out by unscrewing by half a twist. Since the threads are anodised, this works well. Since I use several of my SIR lights daily, I charge my batteries more than once a month, so the parasitic drain is not a meaningful issue for my use style.
fwiw though, the power draw goes up when the light is turned on, even on the lowest dimmest mode. I was suprised to discover that. I think the battery would be drained in about 3 days if used 24/7, as a nightlight for example. So I dont do that. FWIW, that is also how long an HDS lasts, when its on its dimmest mode using a 16340.
A CR123 will run about 7 days. The RRT-01 can also take a 1200mAh 18350.
Im not a runtime cockroach sort of person… I have no personal interest in a light that can run for 30 days at sublumen levels. I carry spare batteries.
My personal preference is NOT to have a clicky in addition to a control ring, which is why I sold my HDS when I discovered the RRT-01. But I respect that different people have different preferences, and a clicky on a light with a dial does have the benefit of a “memory” function.
The RRT-01 always starts on minimum, unless we use lockout to preserve the last dial position.
If you are concerned about parasitic drain, you may prefer a V11r, since it has a clicky that cuts power completely. It is also thinner, some people, understandably, find it slightly less bulky in pocket than an RRT-01.
For me, the RRT-01 is just right. I love not having to click before I dial, and I love that the RRT-01 SIR (SteplessInfiniteRotary) has such a simple UI that even a muggle can figure it out. With an HDS, I use the manual, to remind me of all the programming options… but I dont actually need those features.
the one feature that imho the RRT-01 lacks, is LVP
The Original RRT-01 does not accept a Protected 18350, the 2019 RRT-01 does.
when I use 18350 in my Original RRT-01’s, I watch for loss of lumens, and verify voltage regularly, especially after a prolonged use cycle…
so, given all that
How many Original RRT-01 would you like to express interest in?![ ](https://budgetlightforum.com/images/emoji/google/slight_smile.png?v=12)
