Over ten years ago I started a thread titled “Ridiculous Lumens Claims” linked to below.
It seems like the situation has only gotten worse in the past 10+ years based on the no name flashlights listed on Amazon with their claims of circa 1 million lumens output for lights priced in the $20 to $40 range. Genuine output levels have increased enormously in the name brand lights but they have gotten entirely out of hand in the ridiculous claims for cheap junk lights I see listed on Amazon and eBay. Many do not even know the format for the numbers they show like 1000,000 Lumens. If this is European convention number listing then this might be listed as 1000 lumens rather than 1 million and be much closer to the truth.
The same for the capacity claims of many lithium ion batteries on Amazon. One brand, listed by multiple sellers, claims 9900 Mah for an 18650 cell and at least one reviewer has reported actual capacity at under 1000 Mah but the 5 star reviews for this junk are common. It has reached the point where it is hard to find a decent lithium Ion battery listed there in the common sizes.
Amazon apparently allows sellers to make any claims they want with absolutely no fact checking and the same situation exists on eBay. Is there anything that can be done to rectify this situation?
