People bumping old threads

Considering that Googling “JSRN” or “Just Saying Right Now” does not help in the least, I’m thinking that it actually means Jewish Senior Recreation Network. :stuck_out_tongue:
I mean, expecting others to magically understand an acronym that isn’t on the internet is a big ask. :+1:

Matters not to me if it’s understood. Lots of things go misunderstood. Nobody died, life goes on. IMHO

**Slang.org defines JSRN as an abbreviation for “just saying,” which is often used to express a casual or informal tone in online communication.

Easy to find if you don’t use Google. Second hit on my search engine.

Google is borderline useless at this point. What have you been using as an alternative? I’ve thought about trying Kagi but haven’t yet.

Yeah, if you don’t care that you’re not being understood, mission accomplished.
(Some people actually want to be understood by others, but not you, of course.)

When I search slang.org, I get nothing.
https://www.slang.org/?s=jsrn
It seems that even slang.org doesn’t recognize your acronym.

I find Google to be extremely useful.
Trying to reason with someone that claims that Google is borderline useless–that’s useless.
Posting acronyms that almost no one understands–that’s useless.
It’s true that no one died, but that line of reasoning is useless.
I could rob a bank, and not kill anyone, and claim (in court) that no one died, but that line of reasoning is useless, too.
It’s just minimizing one’s responsibility for their actions. :slightly_smiling_face:

EDIT:
If anyone disagrees with me, that’s fine.
We’ll just have to agree to disagree. :+1:

Not only meant to be read by TMFKARC (The Member Formerly Known As Raccoon City).

I use the search machine DuckDuckGo. Compared to Goggle it’s 99% info from them to me, and 0% info from me to them.

@Henk4U2
People like different search engines for different reasons, which is fine, but do you think Google is borderline useless as a search engine (ignoring privacy concerns)?

Let me re-frase: it is possible that Goggle is the best search engine around. As I said: 1% better than DuckDuckGo.
While you obviously ignore all privacy reasons, it is of the utmost importance to me.
Over and out.

By the way, for anyone that really cares about privacy, I hear that this search engine is a great choice.

I default to duckduckgo, but ~every third or fourth search query I need to switch to Google because duckduckgo only finds things I do not need in my experience…

I tried duckduckgo a few times.
I don’t remember exactly what I don’t like about it, but I prefer Google.
(Honestly, I don’t worry about online privacy concerns most of the time.)

The reason I say it’s borderline useless, is that when I search for the answers to specific questions, I’m more likely to find:

  • products that match a few words from my search
  • ai-generatated articles of technobabble
  • ai-generated articles of technobabble that are trying to steer me towards products

I will try to remember to screenshot some examples next time I run into this kind of thing. It’s very frustrating. The advanced google search helps sometimes, but I’ve noticed a few times it seemed to straight-up ignore some of my criteria.

Current google just wants to help you buy things and it focuses on that above everything else. And even if you’re using it to shop, a lot of the top results are just product tier lists. And coincidentally, the lists have very little variation in the product brands that are represented.

I can generally find what I’m looking for with Google, and I haven’t found a search engine that’s better at finding what I’m looking for.

I haven’t really found a great alternative yet either, I’m just annoyed because I remember when it wasn’t so sales-focused.

Google also used to show you exactly what you asked for, and now it shows you what it thinks you want. If your search intentions line up with Google’s profile of you, I think you have a pretty good experience. Unfortunately for me, Google doesn’t seem to have me figured out and it guesses wrong a lot. Since Google results are personalized already, I wish I could “downvote” unhelpful results to tune their engine.

Brave Search mostly. I like it’s layout. Made it my default in Firefox. I like Duck too.

By the way, I use
https://yandex.com/images/
to search for images.
It usually works better than Google Images, and I think their reverse image search is better than Google Images, too.
I don’t know if Yandex respects their users’ privacy, though.

I think Googled nerfed their image search because of copyright claims. It’s nowhere near as good as it used to be. I think even Bing is better in that department lol

That reminds me…
The eBay search engine (for searching their auctions) used to be the gold standard in my book.
Now it’s pretty crappy.
I think that’s part of the phenomenon known as ens***tification. :poop:

Here’s Wikipedia where they talk about Google Search:

Hi everyone, sorry for the slow reply, I’ve had a busy week.

I usually don’t have any problem with necrobumping. If you can find a more recent thread about the same subject then it might be best to add to that discussion, or if the subject matter has changed a lot it might be good to start a new thread, but every case is different. Necrobumping doesn’t usually cause problems, and I don’t really want to add to the moderation burden by making additional rules that would have to be enforced.

BTW, Discourse does notify you if you start a post in an old thread, but it’s just a heads-up tip and not a prohibition:
