Personal protection, flashlights with electric shock function, what is your opinion!

I’m sorry I can’t tell, but were you being sarcastic?

If not, you deny the source of all those political bans you enumerated. I would predict that most of those “illegal” things you listed became so because one of your neighbors did something awful with one. I mean, the British ruling class may be as batsh!t crazy as they look, but even I doubt they just woke up one day saying “oh, let’s go ban some things today”.

And how does it reflect on your countrymen, to have a need for these things to be banned from you? Are you that incapable of making good choices on your own? Really? I sincerely doubt it! But that’s how it looks.

And how do you think it came to pass that “the sun never sets on the British Empire”? It wasn’t tea and crumpets!!

I would say that “particularly violent” is a particularly apt description of your ruling class, if not all the followers who enable them.

Maybe it’s time to ban them…. Just sayin’. (While I still have a Free Speech Right to exercise)

Dimbo, you are venturing into politics.

And perhaps displaying some prejudices, based on ignorance, or having been fed, and believed, pabulum.

It would be all too easy to counter your views with facts.

But best we don’t go there.

Brother!

Everyone is a little safer, because you are around.

SWMBO actually goes on her own (always in front of me), to the seat across from where she knows I’m going to sit.

It’s a better life.

I carry an x26 Taser, oc foam and an FNS on a daily basis,(work days). In 15 years I have only used the oc foam in training. I have used the Taser several times with great success. The oc foam seems to get on you and every one else (good guys), because you still have to stop the attack and take the bad guy to the ground. Then everybody gets to enjoy the nasty sting. It is only a little effective and wont stop an attack. It will Just punish the bad guy after he beats your ass and the adrenaline drains from his system. If you insist on oc get the foam and not the spray which goes everywhere the wind blows. Foam will stick. If you dont hit him in the eyes it will have no effect till its too late. The taser on the other hand is wonderful. instant stop if you get a good two prong hit far enough apart. I/E, right thigh and left chest. Only one shot though. If you miss then its up close and personal with the drive stun. This causes great pain but its not an instant stop.
Off duty I only carry a Ruger LCP .380 and a Mircotech Combat Troodon. Both can be easily concealed and are very effective.

I cant believe any of the flashlight bug zappers would be effective at all. Besides, at that point your already too close to the bad guy. Be aware of your surroundings, where sensible shoes,(ones you can run in) ,dont go alone and stay out of sketchy areas.

And one post later, the Right to Self Expression begins swirling down the oubliette of politics, following the Right to Self Defense into history’s cesspool.

Thank you, Sharpie, for sharing your opinion, but you need to understand that this thread is about Self Defense; and the Right to Defense of your own Self is NOT “political”. It is personal, and anyone who tries to politicize the issue or make you believe that you are not “allowed” to use any tool you can master to exercise that Right, is simply saying to you: “I expect you to die”. “Your life does not matter to me.”

A reasonably prudent person might ask, at that junction, “Who Owns You?” I would encourage anyone to only let your owner dictate what you say and do, at all times. That, too, is personal, not “political”.

Most countries that ban guns for self defense also ban tasers and pepper spray. They basically have a defacto ban on self defense unless you’re a healthy young male. Denmark prosecuted/fined a 17-year old girl who stopped a rapist using pepper spray.

One option is the Taser StrikeLight. It’s 18650 powered

And no matter the laws , no matter the country . the criminals are going to have guns and/or other weapons of their choice , as they already ignore the law anyway. I am not trying to raise any political statement but it is a fact and will remain that way. You take away the guns or any other weapons and say “this is now the law” the LAW ABIDING citizens obey , the criminals DO NOT.

Brilliant (unintended ??) pun.

No seriously, he could grab live wires and NO effect that you could tell. He let them use him for demonstration several times with the Taser and he would reach down and pull the prongs out and act like he never felt a thing while the juice was being put to him.

I firmly believe every single human on the planet regardless of where they live, should have the right to carry any weapon / method of self defense - anywhere, anytime.

The bad guys don’t give a flying s**t for the rules, and will carry regardless.

Why should the innocents have to pay with their welfare / lives and not be able to defend themselves, when crims walk around doing as they bloody well please.
Carrying a weapon for defense should not make anyone a criminal.
It is legal to buy nightsticks and batons here, I have a PR-24 and a 26” extendable.
Neither is legal to carry - but I do. Only the concealable extendable, though. I’m not going to become a victim because of legal legislation.

So, if Taser works & it puts out some 1400V @ 3.5A, how do this kind of ghetto build-ups compare?

Huge amount of volts but very little amps perhaps??

I have always like this quote from the early 70’s……….

For sure. I’m almost always have a can of mace available; even if I am carrying a gun I usually carry a can of mace.

Now there are foam and gel mace products that help limit that but it is still hard to avoid.

Only the highest power stun guns work effectively, and even they don’t always have an effect on druggies and drunks. Tasers are better because there’s distance involved and higher power, but again they don’t always work effectively. Pepper sprays most folks have (like the little pocket/keychain stuff) won’t stop druggies or even highly determined folks. Bear repellent concentrations are the only ones which have proven effective almost all of the time, and it takes several seconds of spraying to know it’s enough which small canisters can’t deliver. 90% of what any weapon does is make you feel safer, and 90% of it’s power is as a deterrent. You won’t find anyone volunteering to see how effective your spray is or to get shot with even a 22 short and they have to know it’s about to happen for the deterrent power to work. If they’re close enough to disrupt your plans of your deterrent working then you’re already in deep trouble an stun guns require you to be close to use them.

I’ve lived a rough life in the past and I’ve lived in bad places where only fools didn’t have some sort of weapon which they were known to carry. I can watch someone for a few seconds and tell you more about what kind of person they are and what they’re likely to do next than most folks can when they’ve got a full minute to watch them (at least with the dangerous ones, and no I can’t predict women but then again nobody can  ). That’s the real key to safety because it lets you avoid trouble or gives you time to get your deterrent/weapon ready before they can get close enough to disrupt your plans. Usually that’s enough by itself, but not always, so your deterrent had better also be effective as a weapon and you’d better be able to use it effectively, otherwise be ready to digest it because their cramming it down your throat is going to be the nicest part of what happens to you next.

Stun capability or not, any decent sized flashlight can make a decent weapon in several ways if you know how to do it. If you have to use it like that, you’ve at least partially failed already. Spot the trouble before it happens and avoid it, or become ready to handle it successfully before it starts. A light with stun capability is a gimmick, a stun gun with a light in it is better. Neither should be counted on to be effective as anything but a deterrent and they’re not as good a choice as you can make.

I love this forum because you can learn something new everyday.
I give this topic a bit more thoughts and, first of all, concluded that giving something like this to a kid is a very very bad idea.
Thanks to all responses here and valuable informations from police officers I have now much much better view of the entire situation just before, during and after attack as well as the effect of each type of defence measure like taser or pepper spray and I come to conclusion that if (to be) victim is not self aware that attack could happen (and I would say that most of us think we won’t be victims, “it won’t happen to me” attitude) that would pretty much render any type of defence gadget complitely useless because panik and fear would overcome reasonable thinking, victim would just freeze.
I must admit that after watching several video presentations (without actual use on a living subject) of this stun flashlights, loud electricity zapping and scary lightning made me think that this thing can zap an elephant, but it appears they are only good as a method of intimidation, with sound, in case of attack victim would still have to be self-defence-educated because having to use taser means that attacker is very close (face to face) and in that situation question is how many of us would know what to do and how many would forget their own name.
A while ago at my work place we received offer for self defense course, it sounded funny then, now I think, from all mentioned ways self defense course would be most usable.

Watched this video 2 week ago  rewind to 10:40 mm:ss

I was thinking “unphased” as in electrical phasing
Which is why the pun fits so well !

No matter if its a gun or spray, if it is not in your hand when you are accosted it is useless, the assailant is not going to wait for your to “go for your gun”, you move quick and he/she will attack, remember they are ready and full of adrenalin while you are surprised, panicked or at least scared.

Cheers David

+1 what HereAgainAgain said. Regardless of where you live, You and your families right to personal protection is paramount to all else. Criminals will be just that- they don’t care about laws.

A little history lesson might be in order.

Not politics.

We Brits invented The Riot Act, and gave the concept to the world.

George Washington copied bits of it rather later, and I think that still forms the basis of The Right to Bear Arms.

The last time we had to use it was thought to be in 1919.

Ironically, due to the results of a strike by the Police.

Since when, Police are no longer allowed to strike.

We only got around to abolishing it in 1973

Doesn’t mean we aren’t still a riotous bunch, on occasion.

We did have a constitution long ago, which some think still applies (to Protestants, at least).

Starting from the Magna Carta.

Then Bill of Rights 1689 - Wikipedia

George Washington copied bits of this too.

I can see why you might still need it, in the Wild West.

By the way, it is our right to own a shotgun, unless the authorities (Police) consider us unfit.

Whereas rifles, and handguns (yes really) require one to have a damn. good reason, and pass rather closer scrutiny.

And yes, they are permitted for self defence, but you have to get a letter from the Home Secretary. The Police don’t have the authority.

In Northern Ireland (part of the UK), the legal possession of handguns, including for self defence, is rather more widespread than mainland UK.

Just so you know.
