Photobucket changes??

I just noticed (on another non-related forum) that photobucket may be instituting a new image hosting rule. The following message was displayed in place of the photo that the poster intended.

Maybe this is limited to certain high volume users. I have no idea. Anyone else run into this or know more behind the reasoning or the type of accounts they refer to?

I have a couple of free PB accounts and have never had any images posts blocked. Just curious.

I just saw it on TLF while searching for a flashlight mod… That sux

Photobucket limits the bandwidth for third party hosting. They want you to pay a lot of money to upgrade ($400/year) to remove this limitation.

See this FAQ: http://support.photobucket.com/hc/en-us/articles/200724504-What-does-Bandwidth-Exceeded-mean-

It’s a hassle to switch for existing posts, but there are many other sites that offer free 3rd part hosting that you can use to post your images.

Why doesn’t everyone use imgur ?
Easy, free, and being the official reddit picture service I don’t see it disappear before a few years…
Imageshack used to be the king on forums… like 10 years ago maybe :person_facepalming:
Google photos is not bad either, I use it most of the time but it’s a bit of a hassle to handle their 3 lines-long links and embed them in a forum post

+1 for imgur!

My experience:

Photobucket = pretty bad

Imgur & Abload = excellent each in their own ways

I am currently using

https://ctrlq.org/images/

Free and no registering hassles just upload and post…

Good job photobucket ! I will send them the 300 links to update my reviews ……

Crap. Just noticed Photobucket did this and all my pictures are blocked. No way am I going to pay considering Photobucket loads super-slow. :confounded:

Going to take forever to switch all my existing pictures to Imgur. Guess I’ll do it in small batches.

Firelight2

It has also become an adware and malware site, in addition to loading extremely slow when trying to view other people’s images.
Please use imgur instead.
You can read here how to properly post imgur images:
Method A:

  1. right click image
  2. click “open in new tab”
  3. copy the URL
  4. click the “insert image” icon on BLF
  5. paste the URL

Method B:

  1. right click image
  2. click “copy image address”
  3. click “insert image” icon on BLF
  4. paste URL

Method C:

  1. click “copy” for the “Direct Link” box
  2. click “insert image” icon on BLF
  3. paste URL

Because imgur compresses your images and strips out EXIF info.

Not saying it’s a deal breaker, but they all have their pros and cons.

  1. I don’t think anyone wants their image metadata to be shared online with millions of strangers…

2) it only compresses if you don’t have an account. You can disable compression if you want.

3) obviously imgur isn’t ideal for personal image storage, but for sharing online it is by far the highest quality and most reliable option.

I’m into photography, and I want certain photo parameters such as shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length, etc. preserved.

I have an account, and I don’t see a way to disable it.

Like i wrote, it’s not a deal breaker for most people.

  1. ok, well then you would use something else for personal storage, like google drive or your computer’s storage or some other site. Imgur is an image sharing site, which can definitely be used for storing images like normal people do, which is not worrying about ISOs and other metadata.

2) settings -> upload images in high quality

LOL! People interested in photography want to easily share their images, too. Does that make them abnormal?

Yeah, that’s not what I’m talking about. Take an 800x600 low compressed image and upload it to imgur. Then download the same image back to your computer and compare the file size to the original.

  1. Wanting to know ISO of a picture is abnormal.
I can guarantee you that far more than 50% of the population is not concerned with metadata and statistics of their images.

2) Original file size: 2.86MB
Downloaded file size: 2.57MB
This is because imgur still applies lossless compression even when the “high quality” option is selected.
I used photoshop to check the difference between the two images and they are identical.
It was not 800x600 btw, I used a higher res pic.

Just because it’s less than 50% of population, it’s abnormal? LOL! OK.

Again, like I said initially, not a deal breaker, but it may matter to some.

I uploaded a 167KB image. Downloaded size was 134KB. So that’s 20% of information that was lost due to further compression. But I agree, in most cases you won’t be able to tell the difference.

Maybe I should have said 99%?
My point is that very few people care about that stuff, and the reason some people don’t use imgur is not because “oh noes my metadata is gone!” it’s because they don’t know what imgur is.

Do you know what lossless compression is?

I already said I analyzed both the original and downloaded images in photoshop and there were ZERO differences.
That means that it was a LOSSLESS compression and no information was lost.

Go ahead and check yourself and you will see the same.

I did not renew my photobucket account because over the last 6 months they have been spamming me with "print this or make a mug out of that" and that was as a paying customer, then going 20mb over my 2GB resulted in the need to further upgrade so this latest move comes as no surprise to me, I started to tranfser my images to Flickr for free and yes it is a pain and will take a while but I detest being held over a barrel....goodbye Photobucket

I don’t see any changes.
Selfbuilt review photos are all viewable as before.
And I don’t believe that he paid 400usd for it .
All his images are hosted on photobucket
