Many consider the 909 the best large knife that SRM ever produced. (it's a Timberline Workhorse Large sibling) But since the initial price was under $10 when it was still in production... I have a hard time recommending it now... unless you absolutely want it. Especially you being a US citizen.... for only a few dollars more you can get a Spyderco Tenacious (~$35) with a similar blade shape or an Ontario Rat 1 (~$30). If I would live in the US I would look at the local market first, as soon as a Chinese knife surpasses the $20 mark. Especially the Kershaw brand comes to mind. BTW I bought 2 909 when they were still a lot cheaper and I also own the EL01 and EL02. I personally like the 909 best of the three, while being aware that the EL01 has probably better built quality overall. The EL02 is my least liked big folder, due to the weird ergonomics. Sorry that I didn't warn you in time before your purchase about that one btw.
Since budgets weren’t mentioned in the OP and I assume you mean blade and handle length because a 20cm blade is well… not any of the knives pictured…. Anyway how about what I EDC.
It’s light and tough and it has very very nice and easy to sharpen VG-10.
yep totally agree with you bro…The nice blade pattern of the 627 caught my attention right away when i was surfing exduct and i bought it right away lol…
It’s a quite substantional folder. If I may suggest choose the carbon fibre version for look and the other one with the plain black (anti-slip) inserts for use.
Currently I’m on holiday in the Auckland region so you could have examined my K627C. Unfortunately I left it at home (EU) and I took this one with me (it has a Navy equivalent too with black G10 handles):
I have one of these and although it is far far from anything you would EDC it sure is impressive and a great value. Figured I’d post it in this Large Folder thread. I would call it a “Folding Survival Knife”. It’s a beast.
Some words to describe it would be: “Brutal”, “Sick”, “Overbuilt”. It is quite heavy and very heavy duty, the blade thickness is nearly a 1/4” (6mm).
The key feature of this knife is the metal “Pin” (attached to the lanyard) that can be screwed in a threaded hole that is drilled through the alloy handle (when the knife is open) to “deadbolt” the blade and prevent it from closing under extreme force, making it somewhat equivalent to a fixed blade knife.
It also comes with a nice sheath and a diamond sharpener.
It is a branded knockoff which in itself is unethical and when I bought it a few years back I didn’t know any better, but at $390 for the real McCoy vs thirty bucks for this it’s hard not to grab one just for the fun of it, and I’m glad I did. I guess scam artists could try selling these at full price but I would think anyone shelling out that kind of money on a knife would make absolutely sure they were buying from an authorized dealer.
I got a MAXAM-Y0853 Black Bear three or four years ago in Kaidomain. It was very well finished an deverything was ok with it. I guess the steel was not a top-shelf one, but for the price at that time I was happy with it.
Too few parameters for a single recommendation, even on the Chinese knives category.
Enlan EL-01 and SRM (Land) 908 are my favourites. For just one knife I’d pick one of these. (I like liner lock)
Enlan EL-02 or EL04 could be liked by some on axis-lock category (my samples have rough lock. Some polishing of the mechanism might help)
All my Ganzos are pretty good (701/702/704/710/711/712). Axes lock, choose type of blade and handle. I guess 701/702 and 704 are my favourites.
Navy is favoured by lot of people. Lots of models with back lock available (I prefer flipper or a thumb stud and I hate back lock. So, not many Navys for my) Navy 602 is a very sturdy larger knife with a frame lock.
Oh, Ganzo G707 flick knife fits the description too at 205mm total lenght. (For those who like to open it with a button)
Top up the budget and there’s probably a lot ot other good choises as well.
