[poll] Headlamp vs. Headlight: which word do you prefer?

Well maybe we need a new term. I propose the following

Glow dome
Blaze Gaze
Ray Toupee

Or for a few of us here

Dork Torch

Wow, right now 83% of voters prefer headlamp!
I think I’ll still use the other term because that’s the one I like, but I am humbled because I am in the minority. :bar_chart:

Sad to see so many likes on this AI comment, I prefer BLF to remain a forum for humans.

Headlight - US

To most people a lamp is something setting on a table with a bulb. I’ve never seen anyone walking around with one of them on their head.

Some people have strong opinions on this poll, which is fine with me.
It kinda reminds me of:
Is the dress blue or gold? :dress:

In own head we can call things what ever we like , but in real life or www nobody will understand what we are talking about.

Clearly is a Light Blue Dress… !

So, is clearly a HeadLight, lamp is a fixed - non movable light on a desk or on the floor, and usealy has conical or dome cap on top of it… !

That whole dress thing sounded more like a Yanni & Hardy skit…

Same as Chris, ‘head torch’. In the UK anything you’d call a flashlight is called a torch. We only say flashlight to avoid confusion, but to us, ‘flashlight’ is an Americanism.

Older country here, torches were sticks with fire on the end to see by. Not that your ancestors didn’t have them, it just seems the name didn’t stick.

My description that came to mind is not listed.

When you ask someone how they like a certain light, they may say “It does the Job”
Soooo,
If you wear it on your head and it “Does the Job”
It may be a HeadJob light.

A famous line: “Frankly my dear… I don’t give a damn” Describes my feeling on this. But I use headlamp…But as long as I know what the other person means…see above.

1 Thank

Thank you.
Reminds me of when people get critical of spelling on the forums.
Use of spellcheck is great and used most of the time from here at the ranch.

But really, if you know what the other person meant then, WTH, get over it and carry on.
Life is too short for meaningless details.

Read this post.

Agreed. Seeing “duel fuel” annoys me greatly in private, but pointing out someone’s spelling errors is just snarky and doesn’t do any good.

2 Thanks

Just about the only time I point out spelling errors is if it’s in the thread title.
In my opinion, it’s way more important to get the spelling and grammar correct for the thread title. :man_shrugging:
“Duel fuel” is pretty funny for a spelling error, though.

1 Thank

Thank you, exactly that.

To be honest, I hadn’t read all the thread.

Don’t know why this didn’t come to mind right away but whenever someone says a
Coal Miner’s light most people know what they mean.
So maybe that could be another choice.

Granted Miners have not always had lights on their heads but in our era they have.

I prefer headlight, but I tend to use headlamp more just because it’s the more dominant term and “headlight” also causes confusion with vehicle headlights, particularly in SEO and similar.

With non-head lights, I find it an interesting situation - “flashlight” is a linguistic artifact as it refers to when they literally used flashbulbs for momentary illumination, while “torch” has connotations to many people what people in the UK and other countries call a “flaming torch” - this comes from “torch” originally being “electric torch”, so I tend to use “light” most as a more neutral term with implications of its type just given by a contemporary context, although I do also use both other terms when writing reviews etc. for SEO etc.

QoS QaQ jajvam for me…

I kid. But, as an American, I have always found “headlight” the most agreeable to my ear.
