Problem with my new budget CREE XM-L2 flashlight

Hi all ,
I have a problem with my new budget flashlight that i buy at aliexpress . The torch is a Tactical flashlight led torch CREE XM L2

The problem is that when i put the battery in the torch for the first time and turn it on , it was bright as the sun for about 4-5 second, then it start blinking , and then become barely visible.
Now, every time that i turn it on it is barely visible , you can see the foto … what may be the problem? The battery is fully charge

Well, that means the battery was directly connected to the LED, which created a lot of light and heat, and killed the LED. Too cheap lights on Aliexpress often do this

If you want a good light, I would recommend to buy this one:
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Sofirn-SP30A-Powerful-LED-flashlight-Rechargeable-USB-Flashlight-18650-Cree-XPL-LED-Torch-Penlight-6-modes/2933049_32826814342.html

Not only is it much brighter than the light you bought, but it can also be charged via micro-USB, like most phones, and includes a good 18650.

Buy it on the application to get a small discount, and seller coupons.

thank you for the answer , i try to check the led directly to the battery and is still verry low light…
This may be the driver of the led (at the foto), correct me if I am wrong

That’s what I am saying

The driver is not a good design as I can see it. What happened is that the LED DRIVER connected the battery to the LED, which made the LED too HOT, and killed it :frowning:

That is the problem with many cheap lights: they do not cool down the LED, and can result in LED death.

Yes, you could well be wrong. Once the LED has been overheated, it will not produce normal levels of light.

Often the word “tactical” means “garbage” in flashlight advertising. That’s why the earlier reply suggested you may have a flashlight without a driver that directly connected the battery to the LED.

Show us a link to the actual light you purchased and type in whatever words you see written on the side of the battery tube. Someone may recognize what it is.

And take the head off the battery tube and show us a picture of the surface the battery touches, which would be where you’d see a driver board if there is one.

Somewhere around here is a joke video someone made of “tactical flashlight” advertising. There’s a widely advertised light worth maybe $5 that’s sold for far more money than that.

PS —- your picture shows you got batteries with the flashlight.
Search on the name and model number of the batteries.
They may not be safe. Do you know the precautions to take charging lithium-ion cells?
The most important one is — if it starts to smoke, do not inhale.

this is the flashlight that i buy -Aliexpress
I take only the XM-L2 versione with only 1 mode(on-off) , without a battery that i have from before…
The driver is this one at the foto : Imgur: The magic of the Internet
I know that is verry cheap, but stop working after 5 seconds , for me is some kind of producion deffect , now i wii try to ask a refund from the selle…

Oh.

If you want a light like this, you can buy it from Banggood with the coupon code AC18 to get it for 14$US-16,10$US:

It is a very high quality light, throws very far, and does not heat up much, and will not kill the LED.

Be patient, their “help” people just reply from a script. They will ask you to email a video showing the light not working, and ask other things to delay giving a refund. Just persist without getting mad and they’ll eventually fix the problem.

And I agree with BlueSwordM’s recommendation above for a better light.

PS
*looking at your driver picture, there’s a part that looks wrong just above where the white wire is soldered.
The black rectangle with the white rectangle on it is turned sideways, maybe melted partly loose from the board.*

aliexpress is pretty good about refunds
just take a picture and follow their return/refund procedure

99% of the time they do not want the item returned

wle

That driver is a “direct driver” with only some resistor to lower the current; it is a very economical component but you check that the tail switch has not been damaged, if it is damaged it could cause little current to pass; without the tailcap, make contact between the tube and the negative pole of the battery and see if the situation changes

In your driver picture Imgur: The magic of the Internet do you see the little square component just up from where the white wire is attached? It has a white square on it, and it appears to be tipped sideways rather than properly connected where it should be.

Take a close look and see if it might have come partly disconnected by overheating maybe melting the solder, or perhaps it was installed wrong.

it’s a feature of all those drivers

Oy.

at the end, they will send me another flashlight, I hope this time will be fine

Maybe get some good batteries other than those Crapfire batteries. which could be your problem in the first place

If you have ended the dispute because they said, that they will send you a new one - you will never get that. Period.
I always tell them to send me my money back and then I buy again - that is the best way to get, what you paid for.

To get the best light for your money, check out M4D M4X and Fin17 Threads - GroupBuys or coupons for a ton of flashlights.

Those batteries and maybe some cheap charger you got are not save to use.
If you need some, just write it here, you will be helped

M8, you was so right, they dont send me anything, and now they not even answer at the msg… hahah, nvm , it was my mistake to trust them

Did you open a dispute?

If I receive a faulty flashlight, I’ll disconnect a wire and send a video of it not working. It’s hard to prove some faults.
