Question about twisties

I am relatively new to the flashlight hobby. I have acquired several new lights and many are AAA twisty type (which I really like).
My question is regarding the two types that I have; one type turns on from tight (untwisting) and another type turns off from tight (tighten to turn on). It seems like the former is less likely for the head to come off in the pocket and hence much more secure in that regard.
It also seems like the tighten to turn on is much more popular. I much prefer the other UI but seem there is a very limited selection.
The two that I have experience with are a Tain Ottavino and Vollsion SP11 (which has problems of it’s own).
Is there a logical reason for this (expense, technology, reliability etc)?
Thanks,
Bill

I EDCed an AAA twisty where you’d tighten to turn on for several years. I don’t remember ever having the head come off accidentally.

I was kinda wondering if the potential problem was more theoretical than real.
Just thought the other way was a bit more logical and wondered why so few choices; unless I just don’t know what is out there.
Thank for the response.

It is much simpler to make a light where loosening turns off the light. Also Maglite had patents for a tightening switch and many lawyers.

Got it. Makes sense.
Thanks.

i’ve never seen one with left handed threads.

or one where loosening made it come on.
Wait, i have, there was an old maglight i think , where the bulb would go up and down in a weird way that made ON be ‘loosen’.
I think it was a 2xAA light, not one of the C or D cell ones.

The reason would be that making it tight, means it would never come on accidentally ( i guess ).

But i have also had several twisties that do it the normal way - tighten = ON - and they never come on accidentally.
And the head never unscrewed.

The mechanism to make it ‘the other way’ is complicated, the simple way has right handed [normal] threads, and tightening makes the battery closer to a contact in the light, turning it on.

anyway, i don;t think any modern non maglite would do it that way.

wle

Here’s another reason, water resistance. I wouldn’t want water entering the light when it was on.

The Convoy tiny is perhaps a nice compromise, tighten to turn on, but the head cannot be removed, it only unscrews a couple of turns then stops

I’ve had an Olight I3E (tighten to turn on) on my key ring for 2 or 3 years with no problem. However, before that I tried a Tank007 E19 (tighten to turn on) on the same keyring because I wanted to test out pocketing a AA / 14500 light. The head of the Tank007 managed to unscrew itself several times over the course of a week so I stopped carrying it (didn’t like having a loose 14500 in the same pocket as my metal keys). I think the problem was that the o ring doesn’t contact the head of the light until it is almost tight, and there was no friction to keep the head from unscrewing.

Thanks for all the info.
As mentioned, I have (had) two lights that work that way and find them easier to use one handed.

Never had any problems with the head unscrewing on my Thrunite Ti3. :)

What issues did the EOS lamp sp11-s have ?
I have one and besides it being just a bit heavy and the nw tint a bit yellow i’ve always liked it but rarely carried it . I was just thinking of tint modding it and using it …is there something I ought to know

Mine was defective when I received it. It lit but as you kept turning it would go from low to high back to low then to high.
Too bad because I really liked it but once a light has a problem, bad taste. Same with DQG for me. Got a DOA.
Best luck I am having now is with the boxy keychain type lights; Nitecore TIP, TUBE and AceBeam UC15 (my new favorite).
