Question about Welding Glasses...

I picked up a pair of “Green Shade 14” welding glasses from Amazon.

I wanted a pair to have for Solar Eclipses; real welding glasses are better than those $2 Ebay specials.

The left lens is definitely darker than the right. I can’t see my PC monitor through the left lens, but can see it with the right lens/eye.

I was hoping a BLF member who welds could give me the scoop (I suspect the right lens has the wrong shade).

As a Welder/Fabricator, i would be careful with unknown welding glasses or goggles from ebay or unknown manufacturers. ( they may not have the UV/Xray filter protection level or a true certification that known brand ones do,
and may just be tinted glass, and may cause damage to your eyes watching the sun, welding arcs, etc.

I’m going to return them… if I hold a flashlight in front of the left eye; it’s faintly visible. Same flashlight in front of the right eye; it’s slightly uncomfortable.

They’re supposed to be manufactured by “Phillips Safety Products”; but are sold through Amazon by a 3rd Party.

Somehow I doubt if these were really manufactured by Phillips, that they would make such a mistake.

Buy glasses/lenses from a local welding shop. They stock them and quality is good…blind customers are not happy customers.

Looking at a low radiation source like a flashlight should not be uncomfortable with welding goggles if they have real protection. Somthing is not right with those you bought.
for the saftey of your eyes i would recommend getting a refund and buying only OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252 / ANSI Z87.1-2010 certified goggles/lenses from a local Welding shop.

I already put in for the return/refund from Amazon (they’re boxed up to go back).

The frames/side shields look like pretty good quality. I used to wear prescription safety glasses when I worked at a Brewery, so I’ve seen the difference between junk and quality. When you’re getting sprayed with shattered glass for 8-12 hours a day; you don’t take shortcuts with your eye protection.

I’m betting the wrong lens shade is in the right eye; but I’m going to assume they’re bootleg (for safety’s sake if for no other reason) and find a pair elsewhere.

Thanks everyone, I think I’ll check Grainger or McMaster-Carr; I’m sure they’d have the real deal.

Why not go direct to the manufacturer If someone is harming their brand like this (selling bootlegs or seconds-as-new), they will want to stop it. AND they’d likely replace your pair with exactly what you want. I don’t know them or speak for them, just worked the supply side quite a number of years.
