Recommend a 1xAA / 1xCR123 / 1x14500 flashlight

Ok my first post here and I am confused if I should post here or in the CR123 sub-forum ;) Apologies

I have my eye on the MX Power ML-310, Romisen RC-A5-Q5 and the Hugsby P2, both of which I know take four types of battery the 1xAA, 1xCR123 and their Li-ion equivalent. Other then these three is there any other torches that can take the same battery configurations that I missed out?

Also between the three, only the Romisen does not use a TIR. Personally which do you prefer TIR or regular reflectors? oh ... and why. Cheers!

Romisen will probably be best build quality. TIR will usually have sharpest focus (ie throw).

Welcome to BLF, CocoMonGo.

I love my Hugsby P2. Its not bad on AA's or NiMH's but with 16340's or 14500's its terrific. Great throw, as good as my well driven P60 XP-G R5 with SMO Reflector. But obviously the P2 does not have as much flood. In 16340 configuration it is very small. (See this)

Oh and BTW the build quality is very, very good.

agenthex - Good to know about the difference between TIR and regular reflectors. fortunately in the tropics here the vegetation is so thick that having a thrower doesnt mean much. Now I know to keep to regular reflectors.

Bob - I am thinking for getting the Trustfire in the future. Hopefully by then they produce them in XP-G emitters by then.

Right now it seems like the battle is between the Hugsby P2 and Romisen RC-A5, and I am drawn to the Romisen mainly because the Hugsby is TIR. Anybody can vet or comment on the built of both lights comparatively?

The trustfire r5-a3 is quite nice if 16340 size battery is not a must, if you get the good one (from KD), and it's fairly floody. If TIR doesn't work for you (more throw, less spill), then romisen is the one to go for.

I have two Solarforce L2m modded to take different batteries. Using a low voltage drop in (0.8-4.2v), removed the drop in spring, trimmed the tailcap spring. now been using both 14500 and AAs and if cr123 or 16340batteries then i use spacer or magnets.

From what I gather the the torch is a real battery sucker? but it is interesting though... it seems like it is possible to mod it in to a 5 mode light.

lan where did you get your l2m from?

I bought it 2 years ago and not sure where but saw one in solarforce sales . com,

I'm thinking of getting another and a low voltage drop in.

On 14500's r5-a3 isn't too bad if you get one with a 10% low and use that. On AA's, it's no worse than a typical cree light (2A draw).

thanks agenthex... now i feel i need to get teh r5-a3 too! lol.

any idea if it is possible to change mod it to a 5 mode light like the s-2a?

The only freebie mod I've seen is the relative easy one to 3 mode strobeless if you get the right driver, which is pretty cool. Of course if you swap drivers or reprogram the ucontroller the possibilities open up.

Ok I just put my order through EX for the Romisen RC-A4.NOW FOR THE 21 days wait. Will probably get th Romisen R5-A3 next month or so lol.can't be buying more then 1 a month. thanks guys

I have this Romisen light, and even though it comes with a 2xAA tube extension, I always use it with the Cr123 battery, as my "under the hood" light. It's great for working on cars.

BTW, I hate TIR optics. I have a very beautiful SS light that I never use because it has TIR. Just my opinion.

The Romisen

Is your SS with TIR for sale? What is the made? I am pretty sure someone here will buy it.

I'm also curious as far as what is it about TIR that you don't like? Less spill?
