I see Nichias are hard to drive. What kind of host/driver would be best for this Nichia triple? I want a light I can put on top of my camera when I do video. It will need a high and low setting so it isn’t too bright for close ups but still works for moderate distance. I need some help finding a host and driver. Or a pre-made flashlight with those Nichia. FLOOD IS A MUST.
Edit: I have a zoomie that could work if I find a 20mm driver that can work with a single 26650.
A 1x26650, high-CRI, Nichia 219B triple has been on my wish list for some time now. My preference would be for a boost or buck/boost driver. I like the flat, predictable output these drivers provide. Super bright "turbo" modes are a low priority for me. Constant output ranks higher.
For more flood, you might consider a "mule," i.e., a flashlight with no reflector or lens. Mules are the floodiest flashlights of all.
Mtne has 20 mm partition boards so I’d get a 17 mm driver with guppy drive and piggyback it. Choose the driver based on max current. Guppy has a 15/100 mode group but if 15 is too much or too little you can switch to one of the other mode groups and start as low as 2% or even moon.
They’re hard to drive with FET drivers but no problem with current limited 7135 drivers or constant current boost or buck drivers. A mule zoomie isn’t a bad notion as it avoids the artifacts from the aspheric lens, just get a flat AR or non AR coated lens to replace the aspheric.
The zoomie already has this FET Driver in it, maybe there is a 17mm 7135 board that can connect between between the driver and triple? The old board would control modes, and the new board would limit the max current. That must already exist?
So I decided to just see what would happen with the parts I have. I put the triple board straight into the zoomie. It worked good I set guppydrv to a simple 70–100. I can run it on 70% any time I want. And after a little voltage sag I can go to 100% without tripping the 26650’s protection circuit. Good enough for me.
