Replacing a kubotan with a flashlight ...

Good day all.

I am currently using a kubotan with a key chain to carry my keys around. While it works well, I am a bit leery of carrying it everywhere for legal reasons.

I use it to carry four keys. I slip the kubotan into my waist band between shirt and waistband with the keys hanging out to keep from wrecking my dress pant pockets. Not quite the height of sartorial splendor, I know, but it works well. I plan to do this with the flashlight as well.

I am looking to replace it with a flashlight of similar dimensions. I have searched the forum but have not found anything that matches what I am looking for.

Here is what I want:

- 14 cm / 5 3/4” long (plus or minus a bit)

- 1.5 cm / 9/16” diameter (plus or minus a very little bit … Mini Maglite thickness at most)

- least weight possible but still strong

- able to attach a key ring without the tail cap twisting off

- no taper to the flashlight, just a straight tube - think Mini Maglite without the head

- tail switch if possible

- LED would be best, lumens are not as important as shape

- AA or AAA for batteries (for cost) unless there is something else I should consider (newb here)

- reasonable price, less than $25.00 shipped to Canada

I have an Inova X1 LED Spotlight but the length and the tail cap twisting off worries me about it. Well, ahem, that and I misplaced it somewhere …

Thank you for any help. Please let me know if I need to add any information to assist.

Pretty cool idea. Hope someone comes along with a good candidate or two.

Welcome to the forum wes.

How about this Brass Art?

I don’t have some wacky love affair with CNQ, just like those lights and the links were easy. But, you buy from whomever you choose. I was just planting ideas, not promoting seller.

But, to that end, I have bought several things from CNQ, and it worked out very well each time. Others may have differing views.

Good luck and Welcome to the forum.

if you are well trained with kubotan techniques, you should know that using a flashlight with tail-switch as a kubaton will become somewhat distracting, from what i learn from my instructor you need to have a flat surface on the end for your thumb to rest on it, in order to maximize your strength when striking. With a clicky tail-switch on the flashlight you will end up turning it on and off unwanted or loose the ability of putting out higher pressure when striking. More over, most flashlight has flat circle bezel tip which results less impact power when striking, even with knuckling designed strike bezel still lost a lot comparing with regular kubotan.

i would recommend you try to look after tactical pens. Especially recommending you a “Smith&Wesson SWPENMP2BK Military&Police 2nd Gen” tactical pen which is what my brother carried everyday after i trained him how to use one. Any tactical pen as long as there is a flat pen cap will works great. Or just stick to your regular kubotan for better effectiveness on defense.

Or try to invest a bit money into strobe-ready flashlights, just got my brother a nitecore P10, excellent quick deploy, strobes and throws 800~700 lumens directly on someone’s eyes can be very effective as i tested it.

Thank you for the replies, gents. Brass does not do it for me in this circumstance nor do I wish to carry a tactical pen with me. I can carry a jumbo sharpie if need be but I want the best of both worlds.

I will order antiparanoico’s suggestion as it looks to be exactly what I am looking for.

Thank you to those that responded. This is what makes forums such as this great places to hangout and share ideas.

As an update, I ordered back in October, it was sent October 20th. As of today, November 28th, I am still awaiting its arrival. The receipt stated 10-30 business days so I guess it is still within the time frame but it does seem a bit long for a wait. I still hope to receive this product.

I continue to wait for this flashlight.

I cannot recommend this seller, cnqualitygoods.com, for Canadian buyers based on this purchase. I now wonder whether or not I will have this light before 2015.

I am sorry to hear that.

Perhaps it is time to start a paypal dispute or contact your credit card company to cancel the payment.

It probably "just" got lost in the mail. Which is super super frustrating! Ask me how I know... ;-(

Do the dispute if you don’t need the item and need it before 2-6 more months. He does mostly come through, but I’ve waited most of a year to get some things from him.

We know about slow shipping sometimes, but that is ridiculous.

I will likely put in a dispute with Paypal if I do not see it by Friday. Christmas shipping and all that. I will make more of a search of sellers’ abilities to get things out quickly before purchasing anything else.

I am pretty bummed out about this as it is exactly what I am looking for.

Due to my own delay, I missed the dispute time.

No flashlight, no refund. It was only $17 but I am still not impressed.

No responses from any of my emails (two) asking whether it was coming was disappointing considering payment questions were answered in minutes.

I cannot recommend dealing with cnqualitygoods.

Sorry to hear about that. Use to be one could contact Ric via PM here and it was considered the most successful way to get a response and resolution. I had an issue with not receiving some drivers and it took me like a year to settle the matter with him. PM'ing here was the only way I could successfully get responses from him. I just tried to open his profile hereand got the Sorry, page not available message. Anyone know if Ric has a new ID here?

If his id is no longer working here maybe he has sold out?

i used to carry a kubotan when i was young. They ARE really neat, and with a little practice they are effective.

somewhere along the line? stupid laws started cropping up, and local police departments one by one, started getting “updates” on the “disguised weapons” people were carrying, lol…

its REALLY funny to read those statutes? They read, for example, things like “any small, cylindrical object, made out of any hard material, longer than the hand by so many inches, without obvious use as a tool or other legitimate object” etc etc etc…

so, i can definitely see why you want a kubo-, errrr, flashlight in that size and shape.

may i suggest, on the classic idea of “improvised weaponry” (common objects carefully chosen to BE a weapon)…

the humble FUSE??

there are larger FUSES, which come in many different lengths and diameters… they are extremely hard, and are JUST the right shape and diameter, many of them.

go to an electrical supply place or website… they are for (typically) larger applications than your average home use…

I mean, you DID recently replace a large FUSE in your buddy’s large SUMP PUMP at his work, you know? lol…
